According to Natural England's modelling, the fish disco will save just 0.083 salmon and 0.028 sea trout per year. That works out to over £280,000 per fish saved. For £700 million, we could wipe out Somerset’s £41 million council deficit for a decade, fix every single pothole in the county, build a rail link to Minehead, and make every bus in Somerset free for years. Or we could just make the electricity that Hinkley produces cheaper, and we'd all benefit. Being a poor country is a choice.

Natural England have decided that £700m spent protecting fish isn’t enough. They want EDF to do even more before they’ll let them switch the plant on. This will cause a big delay. Put simply, Natural England is a threat to our energy security. telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

Officers have arrested a man as part of an investigation into a report of rape in Braintree. We were called to the Mount Road area shortly after 8.50pm on Tuesday 14 April. The victim, a teenage girl, is being supported. The man – aged 26 – was subject to two custody extension applications and has now been released on bail with strict conditions. He is not a resident of the Wethersfield asylum centre. Through our investigation we have established the arrested man is not a resident at the address where the offence took place and no-one living at the address is involved. Chief Superintendent Jenny Francis also said: “Since this report was made, we’ve moved quickly to identify evidence to build a fuller picture of what has happened. “We’ve taken accounts which has required a careful and sensitive approach given the victim is a teenage girl. Her wellbeing, and the safety of the public, is our priority. “We must take our time and ensure she and her family know they are supported and their privacy protected. “It is not lost on me that this incident will cause concern in the community and it is something we have been alive to since our investigation began. “We want to be transparent as much as we can, but I hope you’ll appreciate there are some details that we are not able to confirm as this is a live investigation. “One key element we consider with any incident is the risk posed to the wider public. “Where we believe the risk has been contained, it is sometimes beneficial to carry out investigations away from the public gaze and speculation. “I want to thank the member of the public who reported this incident to us as well as those people we’ve spoken to around CCTV availability. “We will continue to work through all the evidence available to us in close liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service. “We have also liaised with our partners, as we would with any serious incident, to ensure support for our community.”

This is wonderful. Incoming Hungarian PM Péter Magyar is invited on state TV for the first time in over a year - after being banned - just to tell them he's shutting them down. I hope the @BBCNews are watching. Their time is coming to an end. And it's going to be glorious.

@pub_that @stwater Looks like a wash out. That hole on the left of the excavation looks to extend under the road and the foundation layer has been washed out. Good chance that anyone driving over it will break the surface and drop into the void, which could easily cause sever injury.

Hi @stwater please can you tell me why you have closed the entire road by our pub, completely blocking access, for a hole which is on the pavement with absolutely no sign of any work men on site? We have one customer in our pub on a Friday!! As if it’s not hard enough for pubs!!

I sometimes wonder... What would happen if a British citizen went to America, recorded himself saying something insanely racist, homophobic, etc., published it online, and then came back to Britain? What would the British state do? The hate speech "crime" would have taken place in another country, but the person keeping the recording available online while in Britain might be regarded as a crime in itself, enabling the state to prosecute.

@MyLordBebo Unreal isn't it. When we left India their infrastructure and logistics collapsed. Now every infrastructure project I go to (in the trade) it's just Indian "engineers" and every time I ring about a missed delivery it's an Indian voice on the phone.

Interesting angle for Restore to take towards young people, but they're going to run into the minor issue of young people near-universally despising their politics, and Lowe's personal brand being entirely designed to appeal to pensioners.
Rupert Lowe MP@RupertLowe10

No point calling Green supporting young men and women ‘Marxists’ or ‘indoctrinated’ or ‘hard-left’. Some are, fine. Most aren’t. Most are just feeling patronised, insulted and neglected by an establishment that quite evidently doesn’t care about them. It hasn’t for a very long time. We all know that. They see the system doesn’t work for them, and they’re reacting to it. Democratically and fairly. Do I think Polanski will solve their problems? No. No I do not. Do I understand why they’re searching for an answer? Yes. Absolutely. Our job is to offer them an alternative option that they feel speaks for them. Polanski has done that, to be fair. Our job is to make sure Restore Britain does the same, but from a very different position. One that rewards their hard work, protects our borders, and unapologetically puts aspirational young British men and women at the very top of our agenda. One that provides skilled jobs which pay well, a path to living in a decent home in a safe neighbourhood - the opportunity to build a family. That’s what Restore Britain is aiming to do. Millions of young Brits are already backing that message. It’s wonderful to see. The argument against Polanski can be won, but only with a positive vision. Not patronising insults. Restore Britain has that vision.

“AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED, WE’RE AT WAR!” The Football Lads have joined together because they see what many of us have seen for a long time. It’s no time to be fighting each other on a Saturday, stand up and fight for something that really matters. Our children.
