This is not worthy of a democracy. Trump has transformed the United States into a country where intolerance and violence are the order of the day.

As you may have heard, “The Thing” has been added to the Library of Congress. We made the movie to push against the edges of what we could pull off, and it carries that strain in its bones. Seeing it now treated with the same care and reverence we had making it means a great deal to me and everyone who brought it to life. I especially want to remember TK Carter, who brought heart and humor into that desolate, frozen place and should be standing here with us today sharing in this recognition.  Thank you to everyone who continues to keep it alive.

A major underreported aspect of the Minneapolis raids is that DHS was targeting lawfully present refugees as part of the President's "revetting" demands, and what that looked like in practice was grabbing people and spiriting them to detention centers in Texas for interrogation.

The New Republic is reporting Warsh's name appears to be on an emailed list of guests to 'St. Barth's Christmas 2010,' among others such as Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and Brett Ratner of the disgraced director of the new Melania Trump film. The public messaging is that ICE is targeting “hardened criminals.” What’s actually happening looks very different. DHS points to a handful of criminal arrests, often people who were already in custody, while quietly using the asylum supervision process to arrest individuals who have not committed any crime. In MN, people with pending asylum claims — no criminal charges, no convictions — are being arrested at their workplaces (when they have valid work permits) or when they show up for required ICE check-ins. Compliance is the trap. A new lawsuit filed by @The_Advocates tells about an asylum seeker living in St. Paul since 2019 reported to an Intensive Supervision Appearance Program check-in...exactly as ordered. She was arrested inside the office without a single criminal charge. She is recovering from recent cranial surgery and has significant medical needs. Her family immediately contacted counsel so a habeas petition could be filed. The attorney went directly to the federal building. ICE refused to allow any access. The apparent strategy is procedural sleight-of-hand: Claim the person hasn’t been “booked” yet, deny attorney contact, and transfer them out of state before a court can intervene. That’s not removal after due process. It’s avoiding due process by moving faster than the courthouse can react. If the real focus were dangerous criminals, none of this would require arresting asylum seekers at work or check-ins, denying counsel, or disappearing medically vulnerable people across state lines.
