The Mormon Church takes full responsibility for all the good that happens in its members lives. But a church that taught me "consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God" surely has NOTHING to do with me conflating depression with sin. Sure.

I grew up with depression, but I was taught by the church that those feelings were merely unworthiness. So, I never treated the depression. I just kept turning to the church in an (apparently fruitless) effort to feel worthy. That, my friends, is an abusive relationship.

A General Handbook update says ward Sunday School presidencies can now be composed entirely of women or of men. The handbook also now clearly emphasizes the role of ordinances and covenants in the work of salvation and exaltation.
