Reflecting on this passage by @tylercowen and wondering if what is happening to economics is similar to what happened to anthropology in late 20c. ie. Anthropology was once the study of premarket/pre-state peoples but became the a synonym for “ethnography.” Economics was once the study of economic markets but has become synonymous with “econometrics.” In both cases the tool has swallowed up the original object of study.
