@LeadOnward @girdley I think you're missing the point of the question - it's not about actually calling but about getting people to be more direct about themselves when you're asking what someone else is going to say about them instead of what they say about themselves.

@girdley I respectfully disagree. Most people aren’t openly advertising that they’re looking for a new job, and they definitely don’t want you calling their current employer. That can put them in a really tough spot.

One of the most effective hiring questions: "What will your last boss say when I call him?" Suddenly stories get a lot straighter. Got a better one?

@seandsweeney The Canadian side does have the classic views and if you only get one side that's better, but the US side allows you to be closer to the top of the falls and the power of the water is impressive there too.

Who has been to Niagara Falls? We'll be close this summer on the US side and have decided to take a day and visit. What are the must dos? Don'ts? Where should we stay? Do I need to book everything now? TY!

@RoryTyer Default: ignore. Passive aggressive: mail them back to him with a note that you're returning something that must have slipped out of his pocket. Aggressive: go and leave your cards in his plants. Professional: call and ask him not to leave cards on your property.

One of the strangest things that’s happened since owning my biz: today an employee found biz cards from our closest local competitor placed in 3 of our shrubs. It features their GM’s name & contact info for them + a plant delivery biz they have. He has the same first name as me. If you’re me, what’s your next move

@RoryTyer @ReubenR80027912 @lymanstoneky I'm not sure anyone learns to operate a heavy machine by reading the instructions, so that seems a weird test for literacy. If my Airbnb guests' lack of reading check-in instructions is any indication, a lot of folks don't like to read at all 🤣

I refuse to believe that most Americans can not read at a 7th grade level If this is “true” then it means we are simply measuring literacy incorrectly; 163M Americans are actively employed Can your 6th grader read an employment contract? Read heavy machinery instructions?

Just moved a couple things through my yard; felt something weird on the bottom of my shoe; looked and pulled this out. This could not have been more than 1 cm from going into my foot.

@shawngorham @WinstonHammer Yes, Koreans call this egg rice (karan-bap). You can use rice, fried over easy egg, a little soy sauce and sesame oil. Makes for a quick meal!

@isaacfrench_ I've thought a lot more about the community than the place but I like how you've expressed the need for both here. Certainly in our increasingly online world, place becomes more special not less.

@RoryTyer That is strange and I'm afraid I'm not going to be any more help, although a few suggestions on the thread to check the thermostat seem valid.

@dwcpa yeah this is true- what happened is that the water temp started declining faster despite the starting temp remaining the same (where we set it when we moved in four years ago)

About a month or two ago, we noticed that our hot water seemed to run out more quickly. Our 40gal water heater is less than 10 years old, was flushed last year, and seems to be fully working. A tech from a reputable local company came out yesterday and couldn’t see any reason why this was happening, saying he was happy to send a quote for a new water heater but wasn’t going to charge us for the visit. We have not changed the temperature setting. If you have any ideas about what I should try, please help me score some husband points with my wife.

@lisavsworld My brother got a (properly addressed) letter this week, December, that was mailed in January, so even properly addressed mail has no guarantee of getting where it's supposed to go when it's supposed to be there under USPS systems.

@fortworthchris I was the interviewee in a similar situation. After interview confirmed suitability, prospective boss told me he wouldn't proceed without permission from current boss and gave me a chance to tell them I applied. I gave him a heads up and then they talked. I got the job.

@RationalBlonde There is also a difference in profit per can and company profits - you could have marginal profit on each can (gross profit) and still be losing $ as a company (net income) and the wording on the cans seem to indicate gross profit per can not overall company profits.

This tweet from Liquid Death is a prosecutor's wet dream. Liquid Death’s “10% of profits” defense is worse than the original problem. Let me explain: Their cans literally say “10% of the profits from every can sold is donated to help kill plastic pollution.” That’s a PER-SALE charitable claim. To the average consumer, that means: “When I buy a can, part of that money helps the environment.” Regulators would also interpret that as a per-transaction promise, not a company-level one. Now the founder is saying, “We weren’t profitable, so 10% of zero profit is zero donation.” Here’s the issue — that’s not how marketing law works. Under FTC and state consumer protection rules, a claim is judged by what a reasonable consumer believes, not by what the company meant or how it keeps its books. Consumers aren’t expected to know whether your business is in the red. If your packaging implies an active donation from every purchase, you need to actually make those donations—or clearly disclose that it only happens if you’re profitable. Otherwise, it’s deceptive advertising.
Liquid Death@LiquidDeath

Hey Tim. Let's talk math. We talked at length about beverage business realities and how LD is still not yet a profitable company. And we definitely were not 4 years ago. So when the verbiage says "10% of profits" that could mean 10% of $0 which is $0. Which is not true. I simply forgot on the spot and heard you say "10% of sales" which you did say, which was never true. We have documented donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year even when we were small and unprofitable. That is why the copy was changed to be "portion of the proceeds is donated" to be more clear that we actually donate money. Where saying 10% of profits doesn't actually convey real donations if a company isn't profitable.

As someone newer to faith (~2 years now after being born and raised atheist), my biggest struggle was my relationship with money and God. I kept asking: is it biblical to make money? Proverbs says to leave an inheritance. Jesus warns about the eye of a needle. Paul says not providing for your family is worse than a non-believer. So… which is it? Should I make money but not too much? Enough to tithe but not so much that I might sin? When I was an atheist, money was my god. It gave me control, which was the closest thing to godlike power you can get. I wasn’t rich, but I was doing really well in my 20s. The problem was my heart. I’d bend my ethics to make more. As a result, I thought my talents were bad, when really I was using them wrongly. When I came to faith, I questioned everything: Should I stop buying warehouses? Stop flipping houses? Get a job and keep my head down until retirement? Instead, I chose obedience. I just started acting in my business the way I thought Jesus might want me to…well, trying my best to! And what I found is that my talents weren’t bad, they just needed to be redeemed. I could still make money and walk with Christ. After years wrestling with faith and money, I finally feel content. Now I want to help young men in my church lean into entrepreneurship. I want to encourage them to build businesses, buy real estate, and provide so their wives can stay home and raise their kids, and so that they can be a blessing to others and give back to righteous causes. My wife being able to stay home and raise our son has one of our biggest blessings. But I’m still new to faith…so I don’t know how to lead something like this yet at a church. Has anyone started something like a “Kingdom Builders” or entrepreneurship group at their church?

@JosiahHawthorne I'm confused. You are saying because Charlie was holding political events he is not a martyr of the faith. You think his opponents were upset at him just because of his political views? How often do you need to share the gospel at each event in order to make enemies of the faith?

We still don’t know Robinson’s motivation for murdering Kirk (beyond “he is full of hate). But these events were not evangelistic events, they were not gospel-centered events, they were political events. If he’s a martyr he’s not a martyr of the faith, but for his politics.

This is a big deal, please repost this for reach. Good grief... Intuit, do better... Karena spent an hour on hold with Intuit this morning because Intuit could NOT respond to a chat. She was told that clients using QBO for payroll who should have had checks hit this morning, will not be paid until after close of business today MST. Our employees paychecks will NOT hit on time and we let them know we can loan them money if needed this morning... Here is what upsets me with Intuit and QBO right now: QBO is far more expensive than Desktop. Intuit is aggressively pushing everyone into QBO. In fact some of the things they tell people are hyper aggressive at best... Yet Intuit is having a major issue and payrolls that should have hit this morning will not. Does Intuit realize that more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck? Not long ago QBO payrolls hit soon after midnight. Then they started hitting around 7 or 8 AM EST. I am not sure why this change was made, likely arbitrage for Intuit... And today, Karena was told our firms QBO payroll checks will NOT be deposited until after the close of business today... And more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Intuit I assume you will be issuing refunds to all of your payroll clients on their QBO fees who are being disrupted by this? How will you make people whole? Please tell us what happened? Please be specific. How are you communicating this to your clients using QBO? Intuit, do better. @QuickBooks

My oldest kids love their math teacher. I’ve been noticing that they are both asking to do the math drills online after school a lot. I get the emails from the program telling me what skills they are mastering etc. It’s cool but out of character so I asked why they like it so much. They told me that the program ranks the kids in each class and at the end of the 6 week period she lets the top three students get something from Starbucks for 4,6,or 8 dollars. I was surprised. The kids are doing hours and hours of math drills for the chance at an $8 gift card? Picture kids doing these drills during break, waiting in the pick up line, etc. They don’t even drink coffee. When and how would they even use it? My oldest explained… “no Mom, you don’t get it. The winners pick from the menu and they bring you your drink to school in the middle of the day in front of everyone and you drink it in class” I just learned an important lesson in setting up rewards. This teacher is a genius.

Too many business owners are buying trucks they don't need at the end of the year and paying their little kids through their business for 'modeling' or whatever in the name of trying to save on taxes when they should just be retiring their business debt, especially their revolving higher interest stuff, so they can get a massive interest expense out of their lives forever. Reminds me of the business version of champagne taste on a beer budget.
