@nicolegelinas an industry that typically paid significantly more than minimum wage and has a significant bonus season even in bad years. Instead of seething with jealousy over their “privilege,” consider how much they used to support the tax base. And created tons of jobs.

This article oddly omits the single most important fact needed to make or not make this point, employment. As it happens, Wall Street employment in NYC has shrunk over the past year and is below its peak of a quarter-century ago. All sustained growth in the sector has been outside of NYC. Here is a graph here from a 2025 state comptroller report. (Link to the report in next post.) ft.com/content/5d2e68…

@QueensCrapper @JulieMenin @NYCMayor Maybe they can pass a law that any candidate who has over x dollars in wealth isn’t allowed to serve public office. Do we think our council would vote for it? Hypocrites. Even if they claim to be socialists.

Really telling that @JulieMenin and the rest of the City Council comes up with a budget alternative that doesn't cut services but eliminates waste, and @NYCMayor attacks it and his sycophants start talking about how much money she has. Totally juvenile.

@jaymart222 @MillieOfferman I find it so ironic how many electeds have personal or family wealth and even more how many acquired it during their term. Demonize the wealthy yet expect them to pay for others while making it punitive. You can’t make this up. How dare someone not be on the govt teat.

I think what’s so off-putting about the coordinated DSA/Mamdani criticism of the Speaker and Council's handling of the budget is the personal attacks on her and her wealth. It’s one thing to disagree on a budget or policy; it’s another to suggest corruption and the inability to govern because of a person's personal finances. Following that logic, does that mean people of certain religions, races, or sexes are unable to govern without an inherent bias toward their personal identity? And what of the Council? Are they all so blinded by the Speaker's personal wealth that they are advocating for a budget that jeopardizes their own political careers to benefit her bank account? The answer to all of these is no, but the class warfare crowd sees all things they disagree with as a binary conflict between people with more money vs. people without money. They gleefully shun classic liberalism as failed because it urges looking specifically at race and sex as factors in class struggle. They reject that for a communist/socialist worldview that instead looks at wealth itself as the problem instead of actually helping people attain more of it and ascend the economic ladder. Either way, it’s a dead-end philosophy and movement, as are personal attacks this early in a term against a Speaker who’s taking the very popular position of not raising property taxes. The same taxes that will increase costs on the very people this “movement” claims to want to help.

Birthright citizenship is more than a legal principle, it’s a promise. A promise that in this country, you belong. That your future isn’t up for debate. That no politician gets to decide who is “worthy” of being American. Today, as the Supreme Court heard this case, I’m standing with families across this country who deserve certainty, dignity, and protection under the law.
Attorney General Keith Ellison@AGEllison

This morning, as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on legal challenges to President Trump’s executive order purporting to end birthright citizenship, I joined a coalition of 24 attorneys general in making the following statement:

$40K SALT exemption, no taxes on tips, and no overtime taxes. These “fools” put more money back in your pocket than Komrade Kathy Hochul ever has. Under her reign of terror, the great State of New York leads the nation in several categories: *Population loss *Income loss *Migrant spending *Healthcare spending per capita *Public welfare per capita *National guard members in public transit per capita *National guard members in state prisons per capita *Medicaid spending per capita *Education spending per capita *State-Local Tax Burden per Capita *Taxes Paid to Own State per Capita *Debt per Capita *Public transit fare evasion per capita *Congestion taxes and subsequent increases in cost of living per capita On top of this, violent crime in New York City finished 2025 at levels just below 20+ year highs. There are literally thousands of 3,4,5.6 old bedroom apartments in the rent stabilization system renting for as low as $200 per month per bed currently occupied by renters who inherited them who are single renters. Let me know when we actually care about righting housing size for families. Until then it will take the rest of our natural lives to build enough multi bedroom units to scale of need based on current building costs.
Sam Eshaghoff@SamEshaghoff

Family apartments are in crisis: 3BR rents surge 7% across the board. In pockets of Park Slope, the Upper East Side, and the Upper West Side, those apartments are renting for 40%+ more than last quarter.

@ellen5181 @infopobn @elphntinthroom @jlef423 Yes because we as a nation decided stop funding after school programs that supported children in single parent households. I benefited from those and ended up getting 3 masters degrees and federal employment. Want it to change? Demand programs for 13-24 yr olds that end at 10pm.

ANOTHER MOSTLY PEACEFUL INCIDENT OF SHOTS FIRED ON FULTON STREET IN BROAD DAYLIGHT UNDER ONE PARTY RADICAL LEFTIST PROGRESSIVE RULE It's a good time to remember: 1. The warm weather has brought on the official start of gun violence season in New York 2. Since appears no one was hit, this will not appear as a shooting in the NYPD's released data 3. This area has been saturated with a concentration of men's shelters which are a euphemism for halfway houses for recently released felons. Once home to titans of industry, the area has been left to rot. 📽️:@Helen4NY

Hey @GovKathyHochul you sent an additional $1.5B in NYS taxpayer funded emergency aid to socialist mayorista Mamdani so he can pay $57.5K per child in childcare for a handful of NYC municipal employees in an NYC municipal building? For reference, one can send a child to the elite performance-based Quality Learing Center, the absolute gold standard for childcare in America, for only ~$15,600 per year.

THE GREAT CITY OF NEW YORK WILL SPEND $10M TO JUST RENOVATE BUILDING IN ORDER TO A DEPLOY A DAYCARE PILOT THAT WILL SERVE A WHOPPING 40 CHILDREN AND COST $57.5K PER CHILD PER YEAR Why must the government get in the business of operating daycare facilities? If daycare is $25K per year on the private market, what justification is there to build infrastructure to serve fewer kids/parents at a greater cost. If this "pilot" fails, what is the city going to do with renovated and specialized childcare space in a municipal building? The socialist Mayorista held a 29 minute and 20 seconds press conference, complete with theatrics including the donning of an ornamental DCAS helmet (as seen in the photos below) to announce this pilot daycare. Today's spectacle gleefully included the NYC Comptrollerista Mark Levine, NYC Public Jester Jumaane Williams, and the Manhattan Borough Jester Brad Hoylman-Sigal who like the Mayor apparently have nothing better to do while the great City of New York is on the brink of financial collapse from such near-sighted and innumerate decision-making.
Office of New York City Comptroller Mark Levine@NYCComptroller

Childcare costs are a real burden for too many families so it’s exciting to see NYC launch its first pilot program offering free childcare for city employees. Starting this fall, the program will be available to employees working at the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building. The City is leading by example by taking this important step toward making childcare more accessible and affordable for families.

Three of NYC's four credit rating agencies have made the unusual move of shifting their fiscal outlook for NYC to negative. Why did this happen? What does it mean? How can we avoid a full ratings downgrade? My office just published a fiscal note that answers these questions. TL;DR: The ratings agencies are reacting to the weakening of fiscal shock absorbers in NYC's proposed budget, which relies on drawing down reserves and using one-time fixes. NYC has a large and diverse economy. We have the capacity to get our budget back on track. But it will take action: structurally reducing out-year gaps and rebuilding our reserves. Last week's budget modification from OMB simply shifts which reserves are drawn down—without improving the overall picture—and may in fact raise additional concerns for Moody’s in particular. Rating agencies will be watching closely to see whether we make real progress toward a more solid, sustainable budget between now and June. I’ll be pushing hard to ensure we get this right.

Because it costs more per square foot to convert an existing office building to housing than it does to knock it down and build new, but everybody just likes to be happy about adding supply instead of discussing how costly it is to build or operate. Seriously, on one hand, leaders are forcing rent-stabilized properties to operate on dust and dreams, and on the other, new builds are afforded limitless expenses and tax breaks. Can we strike a balance between the two for god's sake?
