COCONUT OIL This is the greatest and most comprehensive Coconut Oil thread on this app. This thread has been tirelessly crafted to explain coconut oil melting body fat, fighting seed oils, in the bedroom, and so much more As promised: 🌴🥥📖The Bible of Coconut Oil 📖🥥🌴 (Bookmark this one) 🥥 🥥 🥥 Intro We are about to dive into the world of coconut oil. This oil, which has been consumed for thousands of years, is seen by many as a magical health food. They are correct. From preventing aging and degenerative disease, to shredding stomach fat, to fighting seed oils, to keeping teeth healthy, even a health-backed horny use, and so much more, there are so many benefits to this amazing oil. I am excited to share them with you. (I am not a doctor and none of this is medical advice) 🥥 🥥 🥥 Table of Contents Because of the length and complexity of this post, I am going to start with a table of contents so you know what you are getting into and, when you come back to reference the Bible of Coconut Oil, you can know how to jump to certain parts. What is Coconut Oil? How Coconut Oil is Made The History of Coconut Oil Health Benefits of Coconut Oil Ray Peat and Coconut Oil for Anti-Aging What Doctors Hate About Coconut Oil Coconut Oil For Leaning Out Coconut Oil to Fight Seed Oils Coconut Oil for Energy Coconut Oil Pulling Coconut Oil For Sunscreen Coconut Oil For Hair and Skin Health A Slippery, Special Use Other Uses Best Ways to Consume Coconut Oil Best Coconut Oil Brands Concluding Thoughts 🥥 🥥 🥥 What is Coconut Oil? According to the American Heart Association, Coconut Oil is simply a bad oil. Yes, I disagree with the doctors, per usual. Coconut Oil is a fat derived from the meat, liquid, and kernels of a coconut, which is the largest seed in the world. It is 100% fat and 80-90% saturated fat, which many of you already know is a very healthy fat, though common medicine practices would disagree. It is predominantly (about 47%) made up of lauric acid, and also contains myristic and palmitic acids. In 2020, the world produced 2.61 million tons of coconut oil, with the Philippines and Indonesia accounting for 60% of that production. 🥥 🥥 🥥 How Coconut Oil is Made Not all coconut oil is made equal. Coconut oil is made in one of two ways. It is made by either pressing fresh coconut meat or dried coconut meat, also referred to as copra. If it is from pressed fresh meat, it is considered virgin or extra-virgin. If it is from copra, it is refined. I think you can guess which one I prefer. Virgin Coconut Oil When pressing fresh meat, the wet method takes place, meaning that the fresh coconut meat is pressed and the outcome is a combination of coconut milk and coconut oil. On a commercial scale, the milk is then separated from the oil with enzymes, fermentation, or centrifuge machines. I prefer coconut oil termed “cold-pressed”, because that means that it is pressed without heat, resulting in less loss of nutrients, enzymes, and good bacteria. Refined Coconut Oil When pressing the copra (for non-virgin coconut oil), the dried meat is machine-pressed and then steamed or heated to deodorize the oil and bleached by filtering through clays to remove impurities and bacteria. Partially Hydrogenated If you see hydrogenated on the label, I would run the other way. The small amount of unsaturated fats in coconut oil are hydrogenated and turned into trans fats to extend shelf life, something that I think is wrong and should be avoided. 🥥 🥥 🥥 The History of Coconut Oil Coconut Oil has been a staple of many diets for over 4000 years, being used as both medicine and food. Until the 1960s, coconut oil was the world’s leading “vegetable” oil. Then, soybean oil took over and our health began to plummet. I do not think that our general health plummeting after that transition is a coincidence. Coconuts are a prehistoric plant that is believed to have come from modern day New Guinea. As we have come to start seeing coconut oil popping back up, the American Heart Association and Dietary Guidelines haven’t been willing to proclaim coconut oil as a healthier fat, due to its saturated nature, but we will get into that later. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Health Benefits of Consuming Coconut Oil There are a huge amount of health befits of consuming coconut oil due to its unique structure. Because of its structure, from antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, to losing weight, to skin and hair health, this stuff is borderline magical, and I am excited to get into it. So let’s dive in by first discussing the opinion of Ray Peat, and what he has said about this magical oil. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Ray Peat and Coconut Oil for Anti-Aging Coconut oil is extremely high in saturated fat and low in unsaturated fat. This is why most doctors hate it. This is why Ray Peat loved it. Peat tells the story of a couple that he met where the wife was aging significantly better than the husband. When he asked why, the wife said that she had to cook two meals each time she cooked. One was for her, who liked coconut oil. And the other was for him, who did not. Coincidence, I think not. Peat goes on to explain that seemingly every metabolic issue has some connection to consuming too much unsaturated fat, instead of saturated fat. From Alzheimer’s, to brain slippage, to wrinkles, to cancer, Peat and many other experts believe that these aging tendencies seem to occur more so in those consuming unsaturated fats than those consuming saturated fats. Coconut oil is one of the cleanest saturated fats, and Peat and many others believe that all of those above "aging issues" can be avoided or slowed by consuming more of this oil. But this is seemingly exactly what western doctors don't want us to do. 🥥 🥥 🥥 What Doctors Hate About Coconut Oil As I mentioned earlier, in the 1960s, we seemed to switch from coconut oil, tallow, butter and olive oil to soybean oil, canola oil, and other seed oils. This was due to price but this was also due to doctors claiming that saturated fats are unhealthy and unsaturated fats are better. Because of that proclamation, this is something that many still believe today and we are suffering the consequences. This comes back to doctors’ hate for cholesterol. When studying the effects of coconut oil, doctors realized that coconut oil elevated cholesterol similarly to other saturated fats. This is where doctors started to recommend less of it in the diet. This is where I recommend more. As I have previously written about in a post from a few weeks ago, I do not demonize cholesterol. Cholesterol is essential to life. It is required to produce some of the most important structures and hormones in the body including testosterone, cell membranes, progesterone, cortisol, bile acids and more. As I have written about earlier, cholesterol is only bad for you “if you are a rabbit or a chicken”, according to Ancel Keys, the very scientist that came up with the idea that saturated fats were bad for you in the first place. What’s even better is coconut oil mostly increases your HDL, which is generally thought of as “good cholesterol”, though I don’t think either is necessarily bad. Soybean oil, on the other hand, reduces this HDL or “good cholesterol”. Anyways, I don’t want to get too sidetracked so I will link that post in the comments but, to put it bluntly, if you are healthy and exercise and eat well, I do not believe natural cholesterol is bad to consume and, therefore, neither is coconut oil. Time to get in to the benefits 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil For Leaning Out Here is the one that many of you are most curious about. This stuff can make you skinny. As some of you may already know, in 1946, farmers were looking for a way to fatten up their pigs so they could draw a heftier price. They decided to feed the pigs coconut oil. Instead of fattening the pigs, they saw, to their surprise, the pigs lean out and became more energetic. This is what has sparked a bunch of recent X discourse on the possibility of consuming coconut oil to lean out and become absolutely shredded or toned. So, where is the science? Saturated fats are divided into 3 different groups: Long-chain, medium-chain, and short-chain. Scientists studying medium-chain triglycerides(MCTs) have found that MCTs may just increase the number of calories your body burns. The good news? Coconut oil’s fat profile is 65% MCTs. In one study, men who added 2 tbsp per day of virgin coconut oil lost an inch from their waist fat. In another, women were given either 2 tbsp of either coconut oil or soybean oil for 12 weeks and the ones who were given soybean oil gained waist circumference while those why were given coconut oil lost waist circumference. Losing belly fat is one of the hardest things in fitness to do and this magical oil might just be the key. The research on this area will certainly continue into the future but this science, along with tons of anecdotal evidence, is more than enough to be one of the reasons that I have scoop after scoop of this beautiful fat. Note: dm me if you are interested in links to the studies. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil to Fight Seed Oils This is an idea that I first heard of from @FarmerBills so thank you to him for this explanation. He had mentioned that coconut oil was a great resource to fight against the damage caused by consuming seed oils. When you consume seed oils, PUFAs are stored in your fat for an extensive period of time. Coconut oil is a saturated fat that helps displace excess PUFAs. This is a pretty controversial opinion in medical circles these days because many still believe that saturated fats are poor for your health and PUFAs and unsaturated fats are good because they lower your cholesterol. I believe that replacing unsaturated, unnatural, fats with coconut oil and other natural saturated fats can be a lifesaver. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil For Energy While many seed oils make you lethargic and slow, coconut oil conversely does the opposite. Coconut Oil has been found to be a bringer of energy. The same MCTs, or medium chain triglycerides, that we discussed earlier, are processed similarly to carbs. They go straight to the liver and become a rapid energy supply. For this reason, coconut oil has long been used in sports nutrition as a quick energy shot for athletes that need it from a great source. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil Pulling Here is one of the newer things to come out from this side of health X: Coconut oil pulling. Coconut oil pulling is the act of basically swishing coconut oil around your mouth like a mouthwash (I use it in place of toxic mouthwash) for a few minutes. What does this actually do for us? As @hubermanlab discussed on his episode last week, Streptococcus mutans is a microorganism that most of us have living in our mouths and it is actually the main cause of cavities and teeth rotting. It feeds on sugars and digs into our teeth if we do not keep it at bay. The good news coming from this side of X? Coconut oil is very high in the MCT lauric acid. Lauric acid acts as a bacteriostatic agent that prevents the bacteria, in this case streptococcus mutans, from multiplying. In general, this means that coconut oil pulling is a great way to keep bacteria in the mouth at bay and your teeth and gums healthy. There is tons of evidence of people preventing and sometimes even reversing small cavities by coconut oil pulling. I recommend taking a huge glob of it and swishing it around in your mouth for a few minutes and then swallowing it because, unlike toxic mouthwash, this stuff has benefits in your mouth and your body once swallowed. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil for Sunscreen Now if you came here for controversy, here it is. On one end you have those who enjoy rubbing toxic sludge (sunblock) all over themselves and their kids. On the other end, you have those looking for a better option. To start off, I will say that being in direct midday sunlight for an extended period of time without tolerance to it is never a good idea. But neither is chemical-ridden sunblock. Enter coconut oil. Coconut oil has been used as a natural sunblock for longer than it can be documented. But does this actually work? Yes and no. One study that I read found coconut oil to have a natural SPF of 8. So, to be clear, that means that compared to conventional sunblocks, it has a very low SPF value. What does this do for us though? I believe that we should never cover ourselves with toxic sunblock, but, sometimes we do want to be outside on a hot, sunny day for an extended period of time. Coconut oil gives us a little bit of extra protection that we would not have with our skin bare. Not only that, but, as I will get into later, it also hydrates our skin. I believe that this hydration of the skin can also fight sunburn. While I would still not recommend being in high-intensity, mid day, sun for an extended period of time, coconut oil can possibly lengthen the amount of time that it is safe. Takeaway: I would not assume that coconut oil can truly be used instead of a conventional sunblock. With that said, sunblock is not a good option either. I recommend building a tolerance to the sun by going in morning or evening sunlight and, if you are going to be out in the middle of the day, maybe using a little bit of coconut oil and not staying in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. Eating a clean diet without seed oils and other toxins is another good way to help combat sunburn. (I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice) 🥥 🥥 🥥 Coconut Oil for Hair and Skin Health Coconut oil penetrates the skin and the hair deeply, boosting the moisture content. It helps prevent water loss, resulting in moist and glowing skin and hair that does not break easily. It can also protect your skin and hair from external factors, like infectious agents, chemicals, and allergens. There’s no one way to do it but I enjoy just lathering coconut oil on my hair and skin. It makes my body feel better and look better. No need to use too much, but just experiment and see the amount that makes your hair and skin feel best. This stuff is truly a gift from above. 🥥 🥥 🥥 A Slippery, Special Use Yes, you guessed it. Coconut oil makes the world’s best natural lube. If you are looking for something slippery in a romantic setting, look no further. Coconut oil’s natural slippery nature makes it great to rub all over and slide around. Not only that, but it also has antibacterial and anti-fungal effects that can help treat infections. Yeast infections, from the fungus candida albicans, are most common in moist areas like the mouth or vagina. Researchers have found that coconut oil can help fight the fungus and is actually as effective as the big pharma medication, fluconazole, that is prescribed to fight yeast infections. Can’t think of any good reason why not to rub the one you love up head to toe with coconut oil. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Other Uses Frying Food Because of its saturated nature, coconut oil retains its structure when heated to high temperatures, unlike seed oils. This makes it a non-toxic option for frying foods, though, traditionally, something like tallow is a little better. If you do want a tropical hint in whatever you are frying, however, opt for coconut oil. Healthy Mayonnaise Mayo goes great with a lot of things but it is normally filled with toxic soybean oil and added sugar. The good news: You can replace both of these ingredients in homemade mayonnaise with just coconut oil. Give it a try. Chocolate Applications You can make awesome dark chocolate without sugar and other toxic ingredients by using coconut oil. Just remember to store it in the freezer or it will melt due to coconut oils low melting temperature. Wound Healing Covering a wound with coconut oil can help it heal. Coconut oil helps you produce more collagen, which is essential for wound healing. What can’t this amazing oil do? Boosts Bone Health Coconut oil, as we discussed earlier, helps neutralize free radicals. Free radicals can damage bone cells and, by neutralizing them, we give our bones a better chance to stay stronger for longer. Another reason to just eat it. Non-toxic Insect Repellent Combining certain Thai essential oils with coconut oil and rubbing it on the skin has been found to repel 98% of biting of certain mosquitos. Stain Removal Combining an equal amount of coconut oil and baking soda makes a paste that helps remove stains. Just mix, let it sit for about 5 minutes on the furniture or carpet, and then wipe that stain away. Natural Deodorant Coconut oil is a great base for a natural deodorant. Keep those toxic chemical sludges out of your pits. Natural Eye Makeup Remover I have discussed in the past how toxic a lot of the beauty industry is. Coconut oil is a great way to get rid of makeup around the eyes naturally. Just apply with a cotton pad and wipe gently. Lip Balm Just apply a little bit and let it sit. Coconut oil will leave the lips naturally slick and moist for hours. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Best Ways to Consume I am personally a believer that there is no wrong way to consume coconut oil. In general, we just need to make sure we are getting enough of it. I have a huge glob (no real need to measure it out) every night after brushing my teeth. I pull (swish) it around a good bit and then swallow. Other than that, it can sometimes be good to cook with, good in coffee or other drinks, or just tasty on its own. I am a huge believer in the powers of coconut oil to shred fat, keep you healthy, and give a good, clean, source of energy so however you want to consume it, just make sure you are doing it a lot. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Best Coconut Oil Brands Because there is no true regulation for whether coconut oil is virgin or not, it is important to do your research and make sure you trust your coconut oil brands. The important highlights, in my opinion, are to find a brand that is virgin or extra-virgin, and cold pressed. Two that I trust are “Garden of Life” and “Viva Naturals”. In general, I recommend you do your own research on whatever coconut oil you may find and, as always, the purer, the better. 🥥 🥥 🥥 Concluding Thoughts In the end, there is a lot to love about coconut oil. This stuff can help you melt fat, fight seed oils, fight aging, give you energy, and keep your mouth and body healthy and clean. I hope that this Coconut Oil Bible was able to provide significant value to you and, if you have any questions or anything that I may have missed, feel free to comment or DM me to let me know. I am also, once again, happy to send over studies if you DM me looking for them I appreciate all of you who read to this point (and even those of you who didn’t) and it would mean the world to me if you reposted this and shared it with your friends to learn about this magical oil. And finally, if you have anything to add about coconut oil or if you disagree with parts, please voice that below. If you enjoyed and want more, next week on Saturday will be the Bible of Cinnamon which is jam packed with amazing information so feel free to follow along @realpungao! Thank you to everyone and I hope you now feel like you have a grasp on coconut oil! (this is not medical advice and I am not a doctor)
