Justice D. Arthur Kelsey was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Virginia in 2002 by Democratic Governor Mark Warner. He was elected to a full term by the General Assembly in 2003. Re-elected in 2011. And in 2015, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of Virginia by a unanimous vote of the General Assembly. The only thing that has changed since 2015 is that Justice Kelsey authored an opinion the Democrats did not like. Now think about what that means for every other judge in Virginia. The next time a hard case comes across their bench, the judge will have to include whether they’ll be reappointed. Judges have children in college too. They have mortgages, law school debt, and often give up higher earning opportunities to take the bench. Now, it’s been made clear, they cannot afford to make the “wrong” decision, and now they know exactly what “wrong” means when Democrats are in charge. This is how you get leverage over a judge. This is how you bend a court and compromise our third branch of government. With a paycheck. With a pension. With their retirement. This is not how we do things here in Virginia. We follow the rule of law. When Chuck Schumer threatened Justice Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court steps in 2020, Chief Justice Roberts rebuked him publicly. Bar associations condemned him. Schumer walked it back the next day. Schumer could not actually remove Kavanaugh, but Delegates will cast a vote on Kelsey’s re-election, if sought, in January. The threat is not rhetorical. It is operational. And has likely already had its impact on Justice Kelsey’s decision to move forward. Democrats would be screaming if a Republican delegate or said this about a justice that ruled in their favor with a majority opinion. I’m interested to see the reaction if any to this threat of retaliation against Justice Kelsey. Justice Kelsey decided the case in front of him on the law, in the majority with three other justices. Just as has done for twenty-five years. The Commonwealth does not threaten its judges. We do not purge our courts. Our Reilly girl passed away suddenly last night. My mum told me she got comfortable on the bed, next to my mum's knees, and quietly slipped away. I am so shattered. Losing two dogs in the space of 18 months (our boy Fergus died early last year) has been horrific. Reilly was my girl. She was the funniest, sweetest dog. And I'm devastated I didn't make it home to say goodbye. I said this when I told you all about Fergus last year, but I'll say it again - my mum is especially destroyed losing these two. She reads your comments, so feel free to send her some love. I'm grateful to have had beautiful, wonderful dogs. And I'm so grateful that Reilly went peacefully, with my parents close by, knowing she was loved beyond words. Pup photos always welcome on a sad post like this. People are clueless about our history because it’s been revised to paint Christianity in the worst possible light, when it was specifically the Church that preserved all the great ancient texts that illuminate the histories for us. Why did the Dark Age happen? Not because of Christianity, but because of Islam. Aside from Constantinople, all the centers of Christian learning in the East were conquered by the Caliphate. This era was marked by increasing decadence and a lack of moral and social cohesion in the empire, and as society decayed so too did the quality of its academic institutions and scholastic fervor. Some people try to blame this decay on Christianity, but in reality Christianity was a response to — not the cause of — this societal decay. This same pattern is playing out today. The moral and societal decay of the modern secular West is leading the younger generations to reject modernity and embrace faith, and in particular the more traditional and liturgical faiths are surging with young adult converts. History doesn’t repeat itself but it does rhyme.
