Next time you travel, take the back roads and see the world that was lost so that we could save an hour of driving and pass a McDonald’s every fifteen miles. Case in point: I was out and about in the central part of North Carolina, taking my time on the 2 lane and avoiding the interstate, when I came across the most remarkable, unexpected surprise. Valor Memorial Park sits just off of Highway 8, west of Denton. You can imagine the shock when I saw these hallowed Confederate monuments off the side of the road. The park holds monuments from Davidson, Chatham and Forsyth Counties. Amidst the turmoil of the past decade, the United Daughters of the Confederacy have worked to save these monuments and have them placed here at Valor. Private property was donated to make the park a reality, and they are taking donations to help secure more land for future expansion (I’ll post the link below). It’s evident that government officials from the federal, down to the local level, would love nothing more than to rewrite or erase our history, but there are still angels of mercy doing what they can to preserve it for future generations. valormemorialpark.com
