Helping to make the world a better place for generations

On the eve of @Pontifex’s visit to #Angola from Jan 18-21, the pontiff’s Africa message has been clear: peace, justice, no to corruption, and respect for every person. These all require a free press. @pressfreedom’s research shows Angolan journalists still face arrests, harassment, surveillance, the abuse of criminal defamation, and restrictive laws. #PressFreedom #Angola Read our Angolan press freedom archive: cpj.org/africa/angola/ Photo: Vatican News

At the end of Mass in Bamenda on Thursday, as Pope Leo XIV was about to get his car to return to the airport, a little Cameroonian girl ran up to the Pope, and he hugged her, paused for a photo, and gave her a Rosary.

As Pope Leo XIV visits Cameroon from April 15 to 18, 2026, a renewed appeal has been made for the release of four jailed journalists held at Kondengui Central Prison in Yaounde for over nine years. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Tsi Conrad, Mancho Bibixy, Thomas Awah Junior, and Amadou Vamoulke were convicted in connection with their journalism work. However, they have been charged with varied offences, a claim the organization strongly disputes, describing their detention as arbitrary. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has also called for their immediate release, stating their imprisonment violates international standards. Cameroon has repeatedly been cited among countries with the poorest record on press freedom in Africa, with these four journalists now among the continent’s longest-serving detainees. As the papal visit draws global attention, rights advocates are urging the pontiff to use his moral influence to press Cameroonian authorities to free the journalists and reinforce respect for press freedom. #MMINews

This is the moment to change, to transform the story of #Cameroon. The time has come, today and not tomorrow, now and not in the future, to restore the mosaic of unity by bringing together the diversity and riches of the country and the continent. In this way, it will be possible to create a society in which peace and reconciliation reign. #ApostolicJourney

Breaking News: "Peace cannot be reduced to a slogan. It must be embodied in a personal and institutional approach that rejects all forms of violence. I repeat this forcefully: the world thirsts for peace! Enough of wars!" This was the message delivered by Pope Leo XIV to Cameroonian authorities during his visit. The statement comes amid the ongoing armed conflict between Cameroon and Ambazonia, now in its ninth year. Ambazonians are fighting for the independence of the former British Southern Cameroons, which they accuse Cameroon of colonizing as a proxy for unresolved British colonial legacies. The crisis escalated in 2017 when Paul Biya’s government launched a military offensive following Ambazonia’s formal declaration of independence aimed at restoring the sovereign state of Southern Cameroons. Since then, the Biya regime has imprisoned thousands of Ambazonians, including prominent leaders such as Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, Abdulkarim Ali, Mancho BBC, and many others.Analysts following the conflict argue that the Pope’s strong call for peace, without equal emphasis on justice, falls short. They contend that genuine and lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through a resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict and delivers justice to the Ambazonian people. Your take: Do you think Cameroon, influenced by France and the UK, pays attention to the Pope? 👇
