Percentages make no sense for tipping. I go to a restaurant and order a $20 steak. Guy at the table next to me orders a $100 steak. If I tip $5 I’m considered a great tipper, but he’s expected to tip at least $20. Why? The server literally did the same amount of work!

@SuedeKites @ronrule If tips were required they would be mandatory. If you can't handle a job where you aren't guaranteed money, don't take it and complain you aren't making enough. Don't tell me to tip 20% when I'm already paying extra to dine in and get a mediocre waiter.

@ronrule Restaurants with tip share, the waiter owes usually 3% of their tips to hosts and bartenders, no matter what the final bill is. Tipping like shit can cost the waiter if the bill is high as the tip is shit.

@TheMeatDragon @ronrule This is based on cashless tips, if someone tipped cash there is no guarantee a waiter will report it only to end up sharing with the rest of the staff. And based on experience, most waiters are not as honest. Don't be a waiter if it don't pay enough. Tips are not mandatory.

Yes, you are correct but with a small caveat. Servers generally pay tip share on their total sales. At 4% tip share, a $100 steak costs your server $4 (no matter what) to serve, but only $0.80 on the $20 steak. So they will net a $4.20 tip on your $5 tip on the $20 steak, but only $1 on the $100 steak. Shrug. Most people don't realize that if you leave a $0 tip, it actually costs your server money to serve you.
