Joe Duffy, Founder and CEO of @PulumiCorp, closed out Day 1 of CascadiaJS 2026 with a look at what happens when AI agents move beyond writing code and start handling the messy world of infrastructure, deployment, and operations.
@funcOfJoe demoed AI agents using APIs to dynamically provision infra and explored a future where the line between code and infra just completely goes away.

I think he's joking. Right? I'm not cool enough to know. But clearly this is a joke. In a couple years we will look back out how stupid were to think that programming was going to fundamentally change because of AI. The tools are changing, things are getting easier, that's it.

There will be an extreme irony if these models really are bound by human generated training data. RL doesn't generalize and is only useful in a handful of areas. And we all loose our skills to something that'll forever be a B+ player.

@funcOfJoe @thdxr Not specifically to agents, there are just a few key CF primitives that are missing and the CF api has some stateful behavior that makes it hard to integrate into custom Pulumi components

@maddiehfaulkner @NEA @ScottDSandell That’s half accurate. Scott didn’t incubate us at NEA. He did lead our Series B (which was our second round back in the day before Seeds and Pre-seeds). And he’s terrific, an honest shooter, a true champion, and remains not only on our Board but our Lead Independent Director.

what isn’t mentioned here is @NEA’s @ScottDSandell incubated cloudflare at NEA and is still on the public board today. there are great leaders and stories in venture too, and it doesn’t always live in the hype.

Two of our worst VC stories: 1. A Sequoia partner passed on Cloudflare because he didn’t think a woman could lead a security infrastructure company. Seriously. 🙄 2. I got introduced to @pmarca. Meeting got scheduled for a Monday, which should have been a clue. I thought it was just a casual meeting. He thought it was a pitch and brought the whole @a16z partnership team. Hilarity ensued. 🤪 At one point one of them said: “You don’t seem very prepared.” Which was true because I wasn’t. I framed the rejection letter they sent.

Nice: My wife asked why the AWS bill was larger than usual, which of course I had no idea, so I asked Neo, and boom, there it was.
Five copy-pasted `pulumi destroy`s later and it's all cleaned up. Pretty sweet.
