@MoreOrLessAMess I disagree. Abuse of power in the legal, medical, and educational systems are why trust is broken and parents are skeptical of why their minor children need to be addressed alone.

@fortyonedonut @MoreOrLessAMess the doctor needs to ask your child if you have been physically or sexually abusing them. You can ask that they have a nurse take your place so that they aren't alone.

@MoreOrLessAMess My kids are 7&9. Taken them to a million Dr appoints at this stage. I’ve never had a nurse/Dr ask me to step out of the room so they could speak to my child without me. If they did, I would be caught off guard, and say no. 0 reason a medical profess needs 2 be alone w/ my kid

@MoreOrLessAMess Unfortunately, as a parent, I trusted very few people with my children. If anyone tried to get my child alone, it would put a red flag for me too, even a doctor.

I took my 11 year old to her checkup this morning and the nurse asked me to step out of the room for a moment. I politely declined and she said, "It's just for a moment." And I told her, "No thank you, given all the stories about children being abused my husband and I decided to never leave our children alone with anyone, even medical providers. Anything you need to do or say you can do with me in the room." She looked all miffed and just left, no idea what her plan was but she didn't feel the need to continue it with me present and that makes me even more suspicious?? When she left my daughter thanked me for not leaving, she's already shy about the doctor, her eyes got so wide when the lady asked me to leave.

@WolverineInR3AL @pcosprincess22 @MoreOrLessAMess I understand that… but the mom that posted this (taking their child to a well visit) is clearly not in that category if she’s posting about not wanting to leave her child alone. So that point is irrelevant to this.

Taking the argument seriously, it's equally true that the forces of law and order are the reason a woman has bodily autonomy against assailants, but nobody says she owes society a portion of her body back in return, or that this debt increases in proportion to how desired she is.

This is a standard argument for property tax that upon reflection hardly makes any sense at all. For the argument not to be totally facile and uninteresting, it would have to be that he’s saying that there’s something special about land ownership that makes this so. But actually he is just describing all of law and order, the defense of all physical property. This isn’t something we offer exclusively to land owners.

@kingofthecoastt @yhdistyminen Here is how that would work: Year 1: not enough people pay, those who do get kickback Year 2: enough people pay, society functions Year 3: people realize that more people pay than needed, so not enough people pay, those who do get kickback Continue ad infititum

@yhdistyminen For those wondering, the contract is basically "Here is this public good we can produce. We won't do it unless the total amount of pledged contributions is above the cost of producing it. If you make a pledge, and the total is not above that threshold, you get a small % prize."

Can anyone explain to me why we have to continue to pay property taxes on our land and motor vehicles AFTER we have paid them off? As far as I’m concerned, it is indefensible because it is theft.

@bionovastarr @6471_3360j @lovesluvv @emisandrist Do you think men pop out of the womb calling women sluts? Do you think the behavior is nature or nurture? If it is nurture, do you think that the behavior they witness from women might be part of the nurture?

@jack_whitcomb_ not currently but when it was implemented the NFA was. it was a $200 tax on automatic weapons in an era where that was more than 100% consumption tax for most automatic weapons. that said, the purpose wasn't revenue maximizing, but to account for negative externality

I know that overall, we aren't on the wrong side of the laffer curve, but is there any particular tax where we are? Something really niche and stupid?

This is purely, factually incorrect. We can look at historical examples of places with little to no law enforcement by the state and still see that private property exists. The US literally bought huge chunks of its land mass from Russia and France. Even in the anarchy of international affairs countries can buy and sell land because recognizing borders is less costly than going to war constantly.

People sort of act like they live in a fairytale in which there’s a group of privileged land owners and then on the other hand the peasants who have been locked out. But in our country what happens is we buy land with money. You aren’t granted the privilege to use it. You buy it with money, like everything else. And the title transfers. You can save up some money and go buy some land yourself. High housing prices, notwithstanding, very large shares of the country are still homeowners. It’s not like this is an extreme minority group.

@Mokeymokey1 @MattBruenig @Sheesh_barak @TheStalwart @xwanyex The mercenary group that captures and holds it would surrender it to another group in exchange for some other good/gold. Markets are natural and occur regardless of what any socioeconomic reasons a fake PhD comes up with.

@MattBruenig @DoesteinJohn @Sheesh_barak @TheStalwart @xwanyex 1. Land obviously has ‘value’; most large mammals are territorial. 2. In the absence of the state, control of the land then violent men would control the land through violence. 3. The state is instrumental in creating ‘common land’ not private land.
