Mercury, a naturally occurring metal used in various applications, poses significant health and environmental risks. WHO recognizes mercury as one of the top ten chemicals of major public health concern.

A survey in selected countries in the region revealed a steady procurement of mercury-added devices from 2016 to 2020. The project aims to eliminate these devices from healthcare settings over the next 5 years. Mercury waste management will be a critical component of this effort.

In #Africa, climate-linked health emergencies are rising. Over 50% of the public health events over the past decade were climate-related. By 2030, the number of people displaced due to climate change per year is expected to rise to 15 million from 7.4 million in 2019.
