@RachelMoiselle I attempted to defend you last night on X and was abused in Irish by the usual mob. This media personality in NZ joined in but has now blocked me so I can’t reply to him. These people simply can’t engage with debate.

Thank you, everyone, for your support. Over the last 2.5 years I have expressed on this platform what are firmly considered to be moderate, centrist views by international standards. Unfortunately, the Overton window has shifted in this country to such a degree that centrist views on Israel/Palestine are considered verboten and anti-Israel extremism, of even the most vicious kind, is normalised. Despite relentless, obsessive attacks, including daily defamation and abuse at the beginning of the year by a well-known politician operating behind an anonymous account, I have always endeavoured to express my sincerely held views in a reasoned, honest manner, and engage politely with those with whom I even vehemently disagree. I have never once - not once - resorted to an ad hominem attack against anyone despite being on the receiving end of them daily for 2.5 years. This account is one I have had since I was a teenager, and going all the way back to 2012 you will not find one single post of me cursing let alone any sort of personal attack against anyone’s looks, family, or identity. I believe in the democratic right of freedom of expression and the principle of open and respectful dialogue across ideological divides. At this point, this is a principle that Irish society cannot claim it holds. I have an open offer to write for the Sunday Independent and do not feel safe doing so for fear of intense backlash. Our media establishment has propagated a wholly one-sided, morally narcissistic view of Israel/Palestine for so long that any slight deviation from that narrative is treated as suspect at best and traitorous at worst. The Irish Left specifically, who hold complete institutional and cultural power, cannot tolerate any difference of opinion and resorts to harassment and intimidation of anyone who puts a toe out of line. I will continue to politely express my views on this platform, as I am entitled to do. I should be able to do so without fear of endless abuse or threats of violence. Instead of posturing on international matters, Irish society should take a moment to look inward and reflect on why such behaviour is now normalised in this country against anyone who doesn’t abide by the groupthink on a range of issues.

Brendan O’Neill absolutely nails it again. 🎯🎯🎯 Not mentioned and totally relevant too: Palestinian courts can impose death sentences for selling land to Israelis.

Israel has passed the death penalty solely for Palestinians, enforced through military courts with a 96% conviction rate. Israeli Minister Ben Gvir popped champagne. The Israeli government is raising a toast to genocidal apartheid. The UK government is arming and funding it.

@hheals Of course, you don't have posts to show me. But I understand: many around the world think it's acceptable for people to attempt to murder Jews, but they oppose Israel passing legislation that states terrorists who have murdered Jews could face the death penalty.

You donate £41 million a year to terror-supporting UNRWA. You're very silent when Iran hangs gay people from cranes, stones women to death who have been raped there, and shoots and kills thousands of protesters. You're very quiet when the Palestinian Authority executes people for selling land to Jews and also pays Palestinian people to terrorize and kill Jews. But Israel might give convicted terrorists the death penalty and you lose your reason? Your world has gone f**king mad 🙄

@1rorycowan I think the whole conflict is complex & can’t really be debated on X. Israel feels under threat but it behaves badly as do many other countries in that part of the world. The ummah focuses on Israel and doesn’t on the appalling behaviour of Islamic countries ie Assad’s Syria.

@1rorycowan I don’t have any posts to show you. What I tend to do is point out the hypocrisy in people’s arguments. I’m a picture editor/journalist who is reasonably well read on geopolitical matters. I find arguments on X exhausting. I imagine we’d find common ground over a coffee/tea

Show me your posts where you found it horrific that a Palestinian government pays Palestinian terrorists to carry out attacks that murders Jews? Ya know, the Palestinian government that pays terrorists salaries, and if they die while murdering a Jew, pay their families as well. All this news does is give people a thrill that there's a respectable reason for their hatred of Israel 🙄

@hheals No, I don't agree with carrying out the death penalty. And I think The Supreme Court in Israel is overwhelmingly likely to strike this down and not pass it.

Why does so much of The Left hate Jews? Because we refuse to behave like victims they can patronise and rescue. We fight back! We have Israel and that makes us strong. We don’t need rescuing by The Left. We don’t fit the usual minority narrative. We confound and confuse them.

I have always been, and always will be, against the death penalty except under extreme circumstances (for example, I believe the execution of Adolf Eichmann was just). A death penalty reserved solely for Palestinian terrorists - not Israeli terrorists - is a further immorality on top of something that, in my view, is already immoral.
