Somaliland has really developed the wrong way, politically. It turned from an experimental space for hybrid political order into a caricature of democracy. Inside, in the centre, it is pure clan-chauvinism at work. This could have been avoided if reflexive leaders in Hargeysa would have provided space for open debates about the long-standing internal contradictions in Somaliland. But alas, the narratives (on all sides) hardened and this led, among other factors like external investment monopolised by one clan – Isaaq, to instability and violent conflict. Many external observers chose to ignore these complications for too long, since Somaliland being a "beacon of stability and democracy" was just too nice of a story to tell (and emotionally support). Besides, leaders in Hargeysa professionalised selling a "victimhood-narrative" ("We were bombarded...", "genocide happened..."), ignoring the much more complex historical facts in the 1980s. And again, most external analysts in one way or the other bought into it. This means: analyses often depicted a distorted picture.

Good morning. This is Dr. Von Batten. For over a year, this firm has not engaged on matters relating to #Somaliland. Nevertheless, certain pro-Somaliland advocates remain bitter and have, in recent days, sought my attention. They now have it. Beginning tomorrow, this firm will formally engage our partners in Congress and the @realDonaldTrump Administration to oppose H.R. 7993, which seeks to grant Somaliland access to the United States financial system, and H.R. 3992, the Republic of Somaliland Independence Act, which seeks to undermine the territorial integrity of @Somalia. Moving forward, we will also review all new congressional legislation containing possible pro-Somaliland provisions and advocate for their removal. I call on all #Somalis in the United States to stand firm in defense of their homeland. Conduct yourselves with discipline and dignity, remain unwavering in that commitment, and use every legal means available to defend your heritage against those who seek to undermine the sovereignty of an African nation.

The African Union Commission expresses deep concern and strongly condemns reports of Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to the so-called “Somaliland.” The Commission reaffirms the African Union’s unwavering respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Somalia, in accordance with the Constitutive Act of the African Union and international law. The Union does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state. Recalling the communiqué of the 1324th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council of 6 January 2026, the Commission underscores that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland is null and void and warns that such actions risk undermining regional stability.
