@jackcalland @WilsonMKing You have to convince them that, instead of building rural health centers or an export processing zone, giving money without any strings attached is a good idea. Not easy. As a former Indian Finance Minister said, economists don't have to contest elections; we do.

@JesusFerna7026 1. 10% of dev econ papers in top 14 journals are RCTs. 2. Picking 1 successful country & asking why it grew suffers from survivor bias. Almost all LMICs had industrial policy. 3. Good evid agriculture tech, demographics, edu (ie micro) led to structural trans, so we study them.

@audowla @WilsonMKing Persuading the finance minister will always be difficult, but surely made easier with credible findings of positive effects in hand

@WilsonMKing Take the general equilibrium paper. When you transfer a quarter of GDP, you will find large effects. The next question is who is going to pay for those cash transfers. How would you persuade the Finance Minister?

Some thoughts re: the profession’s so-called focus on RCTs and poverty versus industrial policy and growth, from someone who has hyper-fixated on this fact for some time. First it would help to read this review by Juhasz, Rodrik, & Lane, published in the Annual Review (1/n)

I think @laserboat999 summed them up pretty well: "They have too much money and nothing going on. They have no swag, no smoke, no motion, no hoes."

Couldn't help feeling a bit sorry for these guys, who are also victims of the 'loneliness epidemic' but just happen to be insanely successful (if wealth=success). Hyperindividualism comes for us all. 'Agentic anomie'.

@Ingar30 I've been trying to get Claude to improve a beastly 900-line do-file doing some fairly complex data cleaning + merging. I've found it takes >30 min, >80k tokens, and doesn't do a great job. How long did these tasks take for you? What .md instructions are you using, if any?

These are all pretty simple examples, but I'm working on much more advanced tasks too where it also seems to do an amazing job. It's pretty clear from my perspective that Claude Code is by far the biggest improvement in LLM infrastructure basically since we got access to GPT 3.5.

There's lots of hype around @Claude Code right now. I actually agree it's a game-changer. I started with a simple request: create a fake data set and make a standard error bar chart. 🧵

The Presidency has confirmed what many of us have been saying regarding the exercise, including that Ramaphosa's instruction, delayed by Chinese obstruction, was that Iran shouldn't actively participate. This instruction was ignored by the SANDF, Iran, UAE, Russia, and China.

It distresses me that there is an increasing number of high schools that do not offer matric mathematics at all. We cannot build a country without mathematics.

Excited to share my working paper: 1/ In many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, women’s education levels have risen & fertility has fallen — yet female labor‑force participation remains stubbornly low. Why? iza.org/publications/d…

Always enjoyable how an encounter with the way lots of things actually function in Europe is enough to turn an American left-winger (not Joe ofc who is neutral) into a a scalpel-wielding Bocconi Boy ready to slash through a thicket of red tape
Joe Weisenthal@TheStalwart

EU integration will probably always be an incomplete project. To some extent, the existing barriers were probably tolerable, when European companies faced less competition. But now: Global competition has gotten more intense, and we live in an era of resurgent national identity.
