Wasn’t that their position before the war? Now they control Hormuz and we’ve been pushed out of the entire region.

I don't think any scene of a movie ever captured the feeling of modernity colliding with the romanticism of the youthful human soul like this one. "Can't be done, nothing ever happens, nothing you can do" has been the mantra most of us were raised on.

Here is what I think happened on the Iran misadventure:
1) the proponents of regime change hoped and prayed that murdering the Ayatollah and IRGC leadership would result in a domestic uprising. But they’re pretty smart - and knew this was at best 50/50;
2) they thought that once the USA was knee deep in this business - they could drive Trump into a full blown war to effect ‘regime change.’ Boots on the ground. And they thought the American population would puppy-dog after them. This was deeply cynical - they thought they could manipulate public opinion into a war of choice, slow-walk them into something that no one wanted;
3) the American people are totally fatigued with Middle East nonsense - they want nothing to do with sandbox feuds over there. The war proponents underestimated the extent of opposition - and really don’t even care what people think, because they are monomaniacal about this;
4) no effort to sell this ‘war’ was even made. That actually shows that someone in the administration was using his brain, because it wasn’t a sale you could close. But that also meant that you couldn’t maintain this for long. The Bush administration sold us the Iraq war for the better part of a year - with lies and misinformation - but they at least thought public opinion mattered. The Trump administration made no effort, probably because they knew it was impossible;
5) for whatever reason Trump decided to proceed with a war that could only succeed if it was over in a couple weeks. It was a mistake, as was withdrawing from the Obama treaty - even if that wasn’t a good treaty. Because if you cannot gain American public opinion for a war, you cannot sustain it for long. And that means you cannot win the war if your enemy is prepared to hunker down and take punishment and wait you out;
6) I think all of this was predictable. You cannot engage in colonial style warfare, as though the USA were the sole superpower, if you cannot generate domestic support. That is the point people in the Trump administration should have known - and almost certainly did know, but rolled the dice anyway;
7) the upshot IMO is that the USA should only project power in its own hemisphere, and even that modestly. It should seek to reform domestically to be a stable republic - and not try so hard to force everyone into its mould. There is a lot to like about the USA - and making this place better, and showing it to the world, is better diplomacy than killing people in sneak attacks.

Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED. Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
The official signing ceremony will be on Friday, 19 June in Switzerland.
We would like to thank the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in this mediation effort, the great leadership of State of Qatar, for their support in reaching this agreement. I would also especially thank the visionary leadership of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Republic of Türkiye for their immense contributions in this regard.
With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.

Sam was completely right about Kirk and the pathetic fumbling by the admin since then has only vindicated him even more. We're on Aborted Peace Deal #67 in a war no one wanted, inflation is back above 4%, and the midterms are in 4 months. The coping will only get more unhinged.

@revenant_MMXX His "this is you" episode after Kirk died is a condemnation of everything the plantroons have done since. So of course they hate him.

The Great Southern Road Trip is live: a back-roads atlas of the American South. No interstates.
Twenty-five routes, 6,369 miles, 521 stops. It’s drawn like an old engraved atlas, with real coastline and rivers and state lines on parchment, and you can trace any route across it, including a few historic ones like De Soto’s Entrada and Lafayette’s Farewell Tour.
The four regions each have their own character. The Gulf Coast runs through Cajun country and shrimp-boat towns. The Deep South is Delta blues and battlefields. The Upper South climbs into the Blue Ridge. The Atlantic Coast is Lowcountry marsh, Savannah, Charleston, the Outer Banks.
Grab a ready-made itinerary or build your own, then actually drive it. A GPS companion follows along: where you are, how far to the next stop, a nudge when you’re close. Check stops off as you go. No sign-up, all on your device.
It works offline, caches the map for when the signal dies on some county road, and installs like an app. Field Notes has the longer stories behind the stops.

@anothercohen On second thought this isn’t really like what you said, but in my mind, they’re related 😁

We joke about winning the life lottery, because we were born in the USA, but it’s not far from the truth.
These visitors here for the World Cup are getting to experience what we often take for granted.
I live in Alabama. I can start in Mobile and drive north for 5 hours, and still be in Alabama.
My state has beautiful sandy beaches, and also has the foothills of the Appalachians. In between, we have a super speedway that pushes the limits of American muscle. Talladega.
NASA is here. The Army’s rotary wing flight school is here.
We have a festival every year to celebrate peanuts. We celebrate the harvest of a crop with funnel cakes and music.
2 teams from my state are currently in the College World Series, and that isn’t even our most popular sport.
Don’t even get me started on football Saturdays in the fall. It’s something else entirely.
My state is just 1 of 50 states that are all equally wonderful.
This country is awesome, and I do love it so. 🇺🇸
