In reality, COP11 spent a week passing symbolic paperwork while dodging the crisis staring them in the face: rising smoking in young adults, exploding black markets, and a total collapse of trust in prohibition-only policy. Calling it “Uniting Generations for a Tobacco-Free Future” is laughable when the only thing COP11 united was bureaucrats and NGOs congratulating each other for non-binding recommendations nobody will implement. Article 2.1? “Invites Parties to consider…” Article 18? “Develop awareness campaigns…” Article 19? “Consider liability options…” This is the international equivalent of a to-do list you never intend to do. Meanwhile, civil society pats themselves on the back for “fighting industry interference” while ignoring the real interference: policies that hand the tobacco market to criminal networks and push adults back to smoking.

How about billionaire donor pressures? Does your biggest donor impact your “news” coverage in any way? If @examinationnews want to represent themselves as an “independent news room”, I think these are fair question to ask 🙋‍♀️

At #HLM4 on NCDs, the WHO's strategy is to now engage, include and listen to people with "lived experiences". That seemed to be the buzzword of this NCD meeting OK Tedros, if you're serious, why don't you listen to the lived experiences of the millions who quit tobacco by vaping?
