All the people pissed in the replies better be getting up at 4am and in bed by 8pm so noon happens in the middle of their waking hours. Average Americans get up at 7:30a and go to bed at 11:30p so maximal sunlight utilization would be to set the clock so solar noon is 3:30pm

FOR THOSE OF YOU CONFUSED: The "Standard" in "Standard Time" does not mean "Normal" or "Accurate" It means "STANDARDIZED" time An arbitrary time of arbitrary time zone lines. Some "Standard" times can be up to an hour off the actual sun time.

It gets dark ‘early’ because it is winter. Winter days will always be short due to the Earth’s orbit and axial tilt, not because of the time on the clock. Standard Time is simply a measurement of what’s happening in nature: it measures the position of the Sun in the sky. That’s all it is. So why not keep the system that most closely does that and just have people do what people have done for thousands of years: adjust their personal schedules to when they want to use available sunlight? Standard Time doesn’t perfectly measure the Sun’s position, but it is close enough to work. ST is only off by +16 to -14 mins. DST adds an hour to that misalignment, which is clearly far worse.

Can you explain why pDST has failed in other developed countries? Others have tried, and failed, as recently as in the past decade. As I understand it, pDST fails as soon as the people experience their first winter with it and realize it sucks. On the other hand, the places that went with permanent Standard Time saw success and still have it years later. All the polls I’ve seen show either an outright majority supporting permanent Standard Time or a plurality supporting permanent Standard Time.

@MikeBales It was rushed into law and forced on the country mid cycle in the winter because of the "energy crisis". No planning, no preparation, nothing. The difference now is we simply stop changing on the next cycle. Plus it's been 50 years and the majority of people support DST.

the absolute dumbest argument I keep hearing against DST is "Kids will go to school in the dark". KIDS GO TO SCHOOL IN THE DARK FROM SEPT till MAY. There are maybe two weeks in November after the switch to Standard Time where they don't.

@DrSeeWright @Roe_JamesRoe @MikeBales Then wouldn’t that put us right back to where we are now? People bitch about not having enough sunlight after school/work, but shifting the school/work day an hour later would still not provide more daylight after school/work.

And for those that are unaware, pDST has failed in each place that tried it for the same primary reason: it doesn’t work in winter which has shorter days. Kids walking to school is only one small piece of the puzzle. People don’t necessarily like DST…they like the long days of summer. No matter what time we set our clocks to, winter days will always be short…because it is winter. The length of days changes because of Earth’s orbit and axial tilt, not because of the time we decide to set out clocks to.

@MikeBales For all of you unaware of America’s past. In 1974 87% of kids walked to school every day. In 2026 5% of kids walk to school

If memory serves, standardized time had something to do with the industrial age. Before that, it was relative to location. And Einstein would point out that it’s relative regardless. So pick one, stick with it and be done already. This is the dumbest debate in the history of politics. @SenateGOP @HouseGOP @POTUS

@ArchibaldBunke3 @Tara4Trump2024 It works well for you so you want to force everyone to use it? So instead of adjusting your personal schedule to fit when you want to use available sunlight you’d rather force everyone else to adjust theirs. That’s a dick thing to do.

Then do what people who live on the boundaries of time zones do: adjust their personal schedules. Is Standard Time 100% perfect? No. Don’t be ridiculous; it can’t be. But it is close enough to work. Solar noon within a time zone will never be perfectly synced for every single person in every single location. The Earth’s orbit plays a role, the axial tilt plays a role, geography plays a role; the variables that affect the system are numerous. However, within a time zone, solar noon is only off by about +16 to -14 mins. That isn’t a big difference; DST adds an hour to that misalignment and that is clearly far worse.

What you’re saying is the rest of society must be forced to adjust their clocks so that you can use sunlight when you want to. Do I have that right? You are free to go work for another employer. You are free to start your own business and set your own hours. You have choices; we don’t live in a society in which the government assigns you a position and you are stuck with it for life. This isn’t Soviet-era Russia.

I work for a living. Unlike my ancient ancestors, I am not free to just set my schedule to whatever I want. There is no location on Earth where the sun is always at its zenith at exactly 12pm every day. And even if there were, the lifestyles of modern people don't exactly match the cycles of the sun anyway.

Sen. Tom Cotton blocking permanent Daylight Saving Time is the right call. Permanent DST would take a bad situation and make it worse for millions. Especially those on the western edges of their timezone. The standardized time zone system already forces a mismatch between clock time and solar time, and DST locks in a bigger one. In the Eastern Time Zone, solar noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, is aligned near the 75th meridian in the Philadelphia area. By western Michigan or western Indiana, solar noon already arrives after 1pm on the clock during standard time. With DST, that shifts to after 2pm. Your body still expects light cues from the sun in reference to the actual solar time, but the schedule runs on a clock set for a meridian far to the east. This creates geographically based “social jetlag”.

You sound perfectly normal for a human if you ask me. A lot of things make people naturally tired in the winter. Darkness triggers melatonin production, and it gets dark earlier in winter therefore your body will start producing melatonin at an earlier clock time. And cool temps also signal the body to slow down and rest which makes us tired.

We have less daylight in the winter because it is winter, not because we aren’t on DST. The length of our days (the amount of sunlight we get) literally changes slightly every single day because of the Earth’s axial tilt. You getting tired early in winter is what the human body is supposed to do. Our bodies’ natural sleep-wake cycle is governed by sunlight. When the Sun rises and casts light our bodies produce hormones that wake us; when the Sun sets and it gets dark our bodies produce different hormones that make us sleepy.

Daylight Savings Vs. Standard Time No matter what choice is made, half the country will be p*ssed, so what difference does it make? Just pick one, and we'll adapt. For Gods sake simply make a choice. It isn't the First World War anymore.

History has shown that when pDST has been tried in a country, MORE than half of its population got pissed when they experienced their first winter with DST and the country gave up on DST. And the places that tried permanent Standard Time, so few people were pissed, if any at all, that they just kept pST.
