Well I learned a thing today that made me feel really dumb and foolish. As a self-employed person I thought I HAD to get health insurance on the Marketplace. The options this year were atrocious and I considered just rolling the dice and not having insurance at all. ($33k–42k/year for high deductible crap coverage). Now I kinda hate this part cuz it involves AI and I'm so sick of everything being about AI... but I asked ChatGPT how much the fines would be to raw dog my health insurance and it told me I should try going off-exchange because you might be surprised. Well, dang it, it was right. Got what I would consider borderline incredible coverable (at least compared to what I've always had) for like 30% of the marketplace rate. The guy on the phone told me this is because the Marketplace cannot legally discriminate price based on pre-existing conditions, so my rate (healthy family, no issues, prescriptions, etc) is the same as an unhealthy family where everyone has diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. When you go off-exchange/marketplace, you can get a better private rate if you're healthy. I wish I knew this YEARS ago, I could have saved so much money. Maybe this tweet might save you some.
