@GeoffWilsonWAM The best policy would be to actually make capital gains tax free for those in 20’s and 30’s. Would incentivise young Australia to save and invest for their future, whether it be house, family or business. Over 65’s get enough aged based tax benefits - why can’t the young?

@F66Geoff At the moment, under current rules, using your example, you get taxed on the full $5k (if held for less than a year) Under the new system, if you are holding for more than a year, you can still manage your tax by selling in different financial years.

Why the CGT system overtaxes. Two $50k investments. One up by $5k, the other unchanged. Inflation is 2.5 percent. The overall gain on $100k invested is $5k or $2.5k after inflation. But you can only index the stock that has gone up. So you pay tax on $3.75k gain not $2.5k.

@lattenomics @taipan168 My experience is actually that intl students work with more hustle and better work attitudes. My family members that are students are pretty slack tbh The declining productivity is far more a symptom of Australia being wealthy and so younger generations lack a hustle attitude

No serious economist gives any credibility to the idea that GDP per capita growth in Australia is weak because of immigration. The reason is low productivity growth. Very simple. afr.com/politics/feder…

@lattenomics @taipan168 Look at most offices or workplace today vs 10 years ago. So much more unproductive (output/ working hr) today. Much more time wasted scrolling, coffee breaks, early marks, WFH, & generally much less hustle. Unfortunately technology efficiencies haven’t offset this

@taipan168 Weak GDP per capita growth is caused by low productivity growth. That’s so deep, so profound… So what’s causing low productivity growth? Wouldn’t be bringing in millions of “skilled” immigrants very few of whom are actually skilled?? Of course not…🤦‍♂️

Australians are working harder for less real. Labour productivity has barely moved and fallen in recent quarters, with multifactor productivity down 0.5% in 2024-25. Per capita incomes have been declining. This isn't bad luck. It's a choice. When we choose not to reform our tax and welfare system, or Workplace law, or planning and education. We are choosing to lower living standards. The numbers prove it.

Living standards slipping while other countries pull ahead. This isn’t bad luck. It’s a choice. Left wing parties won’t pull the four levers — rational tax and welfare policy; workplace laws letting employers and employees negotiate directly; education matched to emerging industries; planning laws letting people build what they need where they need it — because they’re captured by public sector unions, industry super funds, class action lawyers, and technology billionaires. As Milton Friedman said, the real problem isn’t economics, it’s the politics of concentrated interests.

As a young bloke growing up in Peakhurst in Sydney’s south - Hurstville was the go to suburb. Many will remember a late night at Stallions, later called the Roundabout. Today, Hurstville is unrecognisable. Somehow, I don’t remember voting for that.

Australia is the best country in the world to be comfortable and one of the hardest to actually get ahead in. And it just got even harder. Half of all federal tax revenue comes from individual income tax. Wages fund the country, which means the system needs as many people as possible on a salary. Your pay gets taxed before it reaches your account. Bracket creep quietly lifts you into higher rates every year without a single vote in parliament. For decades the one real edge was holding assets long enough to halve the tax on your gains. That discount is now gone from July 2027, replaced with indexation and a minimum 30% tax on gains. The salary path was always the most taxed. Now the ownership path is catching up. The window for building something outside a payslip did not close, but it’s narrowing in front of everyone watching. Nobody taught me any of this in school. I spent years at the front of a classroom and it was never in the curriculum: how to budget, how to understand tax, investing or super… now it’s imperative. How do you plan to get ahead in Australia?

@David_McMahon75 Only the case if they just happen to realise the gain / loss in each of the shares in the same financial year. In reality you would manage the sales of each share across multiple periods

Here's a simple example of how somebody on low income - perhaps a student or a stay at home parent - can go from a tax rate of zero to 60% under the new CGT when they sell any shares. This person has put $100 each in three shares, with the outcomes below. Their total real gain is $30. Under the current system that gain is tax free if they're under the tax-free threshold. From July 2027, they would pay $18 in tax, which confiscates 60% of their gain. This is completely against the spirit of our progressive tax system. Can anybody defend this with something better than "young people don't own shares?"

@BradJamin3 And to answer the question, I’m in Sydney and the infrastructure development the last few years has been phenomenal - metro line, light rail, tunnels through the city, parklands, buzz of the city has been fantastic. Unfortunately lot of people are too negative too appreciate it
