Beautiful @TheFP piece by Arthur Liu, father of Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu. He participated in the 1989 protests in China that culminated in the Tiananmen Square Massacre. He describes his escape, through Hong Kong, in "Operation Yellowbird" to help the Chinese students 1/7
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation@thecfhk

Arthur Liu is on #China's 'most wanted' list for being a pro-democracy student leader during the 1989 #TiananmenSquareMassacre. For @TheFP, Liu asks what connects #FreeJimmyLai with his daughter Alysa winning Winter Olympic figure skating gold in Milan last month. The answer may surprise you... thefp.com/p/lessons-in-f…

Inviting the Chinese Navy to help “secure” the Strait of Hormuz is strategic madness. A strong PLA Navy presence there could one day be used to choke off energy supplies to our allies in the Indo-Pacific including Japan & South Korea especially in a Taiwan contingency
Bloomberg@business

US President Donald Trump has demanded that other countries should step in to secure the Strait of Hormuz as the Iran war continues. “Why are we maintaining the Hormuz Strait when it’s really there for China and many other countries?” bloom.bg/3N7WTI6

"The words mean something more spiritual: ‘free human beings everywhere to be themselves, to enjoy their natural rights to live as they choose.’ This is the freedom that my daughter Alysa enjoyed in Milan, when she chose to skate in transcendent joy.” 7/end

“More universally, he would want those words to mean ‘free all political prisoners everywhere.’ But even that, I believe, does not capture what he would really want to say. 6/7

"What would Lai himself want the words Free Jimmy Lai to stand for? Certainly he would want them to mean ‘free all Hong Kong political prisoners’; and beyond that, ‘allow all the Hong Kong people to enjoy the freedoms that Beijing promised.’’ 5/7

“...Yes, free. That was it. My daughter, through her charismatic skating, had given me another lesson in how precious freedom is...People around the world chant ‘Free Jimmy Lai!’ My ears hear that word again: free.” 4/7

“Any father would be proud to see his daughter win an Olympic gold medal. But when I watched my daughter Alysa’s stunning performance in the women’s free skate earlier this month, it hit me in a way that I think was different from what just about anybody else experienced...” 3/7

Arthur Liu writes that “Jimmy Lai had been a major donor to the protesting students in Beijing—sending them tents, cash, and blankets. Lai then became a prime mover in ‘Operation Yellowbird’” 2/7

This @washingtonpost investigation is a must-read piece. It exposes how BYD’s contractors allegedly used #forcedlabor of Chinese workers to build a factory and expand their operations in #Brazil. Non-stop work without safety equipment, 20-30 people sharing one room, confiscation of passports... These conditions akin to modern day slavery are not only bad for Chinese workers, but forced labor by Chinese companies also harms Brazilian workers, American workers, and gives Chinese companies an unfair advantage against their American rivals. At @NEDemocracy, we’re proud that one of our long-term partners, @chinalaborwatch has been at the forefront of exposing forced labor practices by Chinese companies around the world. washingtonpost.com/world/2026/03/…

Sec. Scott Bessent's Paris meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng has been described as "the most important bilateral meeting before the Xi-Trump meeting." President Trump promised "100 percent" to secure the release of #JimmyLai from prison in #HongKong. “I’ll get him out. He’ll be easy to get out,” he said. We urge @SecScottBessent to prioritize fulfilling @POTUS's promise and securing Lai’s freedom in his negotiations with Chinese officials. It would likely be the most significant accomplishment of the trip. #FreeJimmyLai apnews.com/article/china-…

The UK espionage case shows that it is long past time for @SenateForeign to pass the HKETO Certification Act sponsored by @SenJeffMerkley @SenDanSullivan @SenJohnCurtis @timkaine @SenRickScott. Stand up against repression in Hong Kong & attempts to silence free speech in America
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation@thecfhk

👏👏 @WSJopinion for picking up the ongoing U.K. #HongKong Economic and Trade Office spy trial, in which British prosecutors say the #London #HKETO paid more than $127,500 to have bountied #HongKongers like our colleague @Chloe_chc_25 and others followed. There are 14 HKETOs outside mainland #China and none of them deserve the diplomatic privileges they enjoy, because #HK is no longer autonomous from the mainland. In the U.S., #HKETOs remain open for business — surveillance and intimidation of the Hong Kong community — in #NewYork, #SanFrancisco and #WashingtonDC. "A bipartisan bill in Congress — the HKETO Certification Act — would give the Secretary of State authority to shut the U.S. HKETOs down, and this British case is another reason to pass it." wsj.com/opinion/hong-k…

The sentencing of U.S.-based activist @AnnaKwokFY’s father is an unprecedented act of transnational repression designed to silence criticism of the Chinese gov in America. How are we letting Hong Kong officials get away with this? Enough. Shut down the HKETOs
Hong Kong Democracy Council@hkdc_us

The father of HKDC's @AnnaKwokFY has been sentenced to 8 months in prison for "attempting to deal with assets of an absconder" under the 2024 national security law for trying to cancel an insurance policy for her he took out when she was two.

Don't be fooled. Overturning the "fraud" charge against #FreeJimmyLai has no impact as he has already been imprisoned for over five years because of that charge. The fact that this decision was just announced is further evidence of political control of the Hong Kong court system
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation@thecfhk

Utter nonsense designed to maximize #JimmyLai's suffering. Now the 78-year-old Apple Daily publisher is safely locked away under a 20-year sentence, #HongKong's circus court quashes the fraud conviction for which he has already served 5 years and 9 months in prison. #FreeJimmyLai hongkongfp.com/2026/02/26/bre…

In @Diplomat_APAC I argue that Congress should retake its rightful place as a defender of human rights in Hong Kong by ending the special privileges for the HK Econ & Trade Offices which serve as vehicles for Beijing's repression in both HK & the US thediplomat.com/2026/02/americ…

Ah yes, the policy goal of “stable relations,” which in practice has meant the US stops advancing its interests in order to preserve dialogue. Beijing uses that paralysis to shift the status quo & entrench authoritarian influence while we congratulate ourselves on “stability.”
Mary Kissel@marykissel

Glad to know what we want, but what Beijing wants matters too. I see no evidence (historical or current) that Communist China desires or is even capable of "stable" relations with the free world. So why would U.S. policy aim for a goal that's fundamentally unattainable?

@SecRubio @StateDept it is time to sanction Hong Kong officials involved in the persecution and prosecution of Jimmy Lai. Stand up for human rights in Hong Kong!
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation@thecfhk

3/ We call on @StateDept @USTreasury to use Global Magnitsky and Hong Kong-related authorities to designate officials responsible for the persecution and sentencing of Jimmy Lai and the Apple Daily journalists and the dismantling of #AppleDaily.

2/2 And why the hell do we still allow the #HongKong Econ & Trade Offices to operate freely in the US? If HK wants its own diplomatic privileges it must respect basic rights. Until then @SenateForeign @HouseForeignGOP should close the HKETOs & stand with victims of repression

1/2 The conviction of @AnnaKwokFY's father is a brazen attempt to silence a U.S.-based advocate by targeting her family. @SecRubio @SenateForeign @HouseForeign should not sit idly by while the Hong Kong gov threatens & intimidates us in America
Anna Kwok 郭鳳儀@AnnaKwokFY

Today, my father was convicted simply for being my father. This is how the Hong Kong government retaliates against me and my pro-democracy advocacy. This is hostage taking. This is transnational repression.
