Who understood Odysseus better: Homer or Nolan? And if every old myth must be modernized before we can bear it, then why keep adapting old myths at all? Why not have the courage to create new ones? Homer does not need modern permission to matter. An adaptation earns Homer’s name only if it preserves Homer’s moral world. Because if Odysseus must be remade into a modern man before we can admire him, then the problem is not Homer. The problem is us. Old myths should challenge the modern world, not be reduced until they fit inside it.
