When we say we are committed to enduring peace, we mean it. In the DRC, we call for a durable peace that addresses security concerns & lays a foundation for a thriving regional economy. We are engaging with leaders to work towards that peace.

@AASciences @AsjRdc @GlobalYAcademy #ScienceForAll #NoBodyToBeLeftBehind

Thrilled that our 2024 edition of NanotechnologyDay took place at "Complexe Scolaire Minzoto" in Kinshasa (DR Congo) last Friday, 29 Nov! Our primary goal in this program is to inspire young minds by showcasing the incredible potential of nanotechnologies and promoting science education. It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the children as they engaged with the materials. They were so excited, in fact, they immediately asked us to come back! It's clear that we need more children growing up with a passion for science, and we aim to show them how science can help shape a brighter future for our country, DR Congo, and the world. Through these initiatives, we hope to foster the next generation of brilliant scientists who will contribute to making the world a better place. A huge thank you to @AASciences for their invaluable support through the ARISE program, which made this event possible. We are excited for the future and hope to continue expanding our outreach, not only across Kinshasa but throughout the entire country. With continued support, we can inspire even more young minds and create a lasting impact! @AsjRdc @UNESCO #ScienceForAll #NoBodyTobeLeftBehind

According to a recent survey by the UK Academy of Medical Sciences @acmedsci (AMS), 70/118 African Early Career Researchers identified the key challenges in advancing their careers as follows: lack of funding, skill-building, and networking opportunities. In July 2024, I was honored to receive the invite from AMS to join the steering committee for the African Researcher Capacity Strengthening Workshop, co-hosted by AMS, the @ASSAf_Official, and the @NASAConlineOrg . Being passionate about science advocacy, I eagerly accepted and supported the development of curriculum for this innovative program. Over the past months, we selected 60 exceptional researchers from 28 African countries to participate in high-profile workshops on grant writing, leadership, collaboration, and scientific writing. Balancing this with my other professional responsibilities and commitment to my other projects with @AsjRdc and @GlobalYAcademy was challenging, but seeing the participants’ enthusiasm and growth during the workshop this week in Johannesburg made every effort worthwhile. I am immensely grateful to the AMS and other supporting academies for making this workshop possible. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the vital role science academies play in capacity building and professional development, particularly in Africa. I urge funders, philanthropists, and foundations worldwide to support science academies. These organizations empower scientists and drive impactful research addressing global challenges, especially in Africa. If you’re unfamiliar with their work, engage with them and explore their transformative projects. Together, we can leverage science to ensure sustainable development, leaving no one behind. @FordFoundation @gatesfoundation @K_B_Foundation @unescobangkok @BayerFoundation #ScienceForAll #AfricanResearchersConnect

Winning the @NobelPrize is the honour of a lifetime and the realisation of a lifelong dream - it still hasn’t really sunk in yet. With AlphaFold2 we cracked the 50-year grand challenge of protein structure prediction: predicting the 3D structure of a protein purely from its amino acid sequence. Proteins are the building blocks of life, and knowing the structure of a protein is crucial for understanding the function it performs. We then folded all 200 million proteins known to science and made those structures freely available for anyone in the world to use, with the help of our wonderful collaborators at @emblebi. Over 2 million researchers have already used AlphaFold2 and its predictions to advance a huge range of important work - everything from enzyme design, to disease understanding, to drug discovery. But this is only the beginning. Over the next few years AI will help us make great strides towards developing new and more effective therapies for today's most prevalent diseases, and the fantastic team at @IsomorphicLabs are making rapid progress on this mission. I can’t think of a more important or beneficial use of AI. Then of course there is advancing AGI itself, the original and enduring goal, and the vision behind the founding of DeepMind nearly 15 years ago. If AI is built safely and responsibly, I believe it will be one of the most transformative and beneficial technologies ever. I’ve always thought of AI as the ultimate tool to help us accelerate scientific discovery. Congratulations to John Jumper (and David Baker!), the amazing AlphaFold team, and all our incredible colleagues at @GoogleDeepMind and @Google that supported and encouraged us along the way - this award is for all of us! It’s been such an honour and privilege to work with all of you to advance the frontiers of AI and science, and there is so much more to come!
