@JLakeman68992 @Authw8 @cat_digby It was unequivocally worse. The mass extermination of entire peoples by working them to death dwarfs human sacrifice and it's not even close. We have contemporary accounts condemning the atrocities of the conquistadors. They were monsters by the standards of their time

@kearnpat @Authw8 @cat_digby Spanish encomiendas could be rough. Mines were rougher. Sugar plantations (totally different conversation btw) were worst of all. None of those are remotely as bad as human sacrifice. Spanish conquest was an unambiguous improvement. To say otherwise is detached from reality

i feel like nobody knows how to read this movie. the basic idea is we spend the whole movie getting madder and madder at the maya for what they did to this guy and his family. then suddenly at the end the spanish show up and we realize they're about to do the same exact shit on a much greater scale. it's an anti-colonialism movie from a very non-woke perspective, which people think is a contradiction for some reason
from death to death transfigured@BODY_W0_WHORGAN

Insane for Mel Gibson to make like this INCREDIBLY racist movie for like 99% of it only to sort of pull the rug and be like 'yeah what comes immediately after this is so much fucking worse' with one shot

@JLakeman68992 @Authw8 @cat_digby Meanwhile the average life span of an enslaved person on a sugar plantation was 21 and generally slaveholders expected to work someone to death after 7 years

@Authw8 @cat_digby You are fucking insane if you think working a manual labor job is remotely similar to industrial scale ritual human sacrifice.

@WildmanWV @smalls2672 If they were fighting for state's rights, why were they stealing Kansas elections at gunpoint to try and force slavery on the state?

@smalls2672 It’s what we’re taught especially the northerners. But preserving states rights is what they were fighting for and that’s not treasonous.

This is John C Woods, the hangman of Nuremberg trials, who lied about being experienced to get the job. He claimed to have learned from old cowboy movies His incompetency led to excessive suffering of condemned Nazis

Here is the real question I want to ask. If gas prices keep rising.... What do we expect people who make minimum wage to do? Not "how are they going to pay for gas" but more "would you show up for a job where one hour of work can buy you less than one gallon of gas?"

@DexterousIncel @rushicrypto If you're making minimum wage, odds are you're paying little to nothing in taxes already. The only way to fix economic inequality is to expand social services and raise wages.

@rushicrypto We need to desperately rescind the income tax for these people. I'm a bit out of touch with them but how the fuck are these people genuinely surviving? I'm not trying to sound elitist. I'm genuinely curious.

@TastelessAlex I still live in the town I went to college in in the late aughts. A lot of the restaurants that I considered good in college I won't go to now because everywhere else upgraded their menu and they didn't keep pace

Growing up we basically ate at places like Chili's because that was the only option. Before Starbucks, my dad would go to random local bakeries and get what was basically Folgers that was sitting in a glass pot for hours. Sierra Nevada was the only craft beer.

The millennial craft movement vastly improved American gastronomy and I refuse to let zoomers with no cultural memory of the bland garbage we ate and drank 20 years ago meme me into thinking it is cringe.

@unsafebl0ck @nws4702 @MattLaneWrites @CertifTard5 No one said that. You don’t need two working parents to afford children. They’re cheap. And my kids will go to college debt free (if they want to, but I’d recommend otherwise). It’s possible on a single income. Anyone telling you different wants to demoralize you.

LOL. The most brutal wars are always ideological. The Opium Wars, waged by Britain against China for profit, killed around 20–30 thousand people, predominantly Chinese. By contrast, the Taiping Civil War, fought during roughly the same period, resulted in the deaths of 20–30 MILLION Chinese. 1000 times more. It was primarily ideological.

@Garytweets7 @NotPotBol See above. The state and the law exist to protect the interests of the ruling class, not to dispense justice. Or are you really credulous enough to believe that a government that bombs schools and allows the elite to traffic children is actually invested in justice?

@kearnpat @NotPotBol I think the term systematised murder is meaningless slop bullshit to seem morally righteous. If its a crime, prosecute them, if its not a crime yet, vote to make it a crime and prosecute it. This is civilised society, you don't execute people with no trial for accused crimes.

@Garytweets7 @NotPotBol If murder is bad, why are you getting so adamant in defending systematized murder? Could it possibly be that your objection isn't to the murder itself but that it threatens existing systems of power?

@kearnpat @NotPotBol The truth is you don't lose sleep over the alleged thousands either, and neither do I, so don't pretend to moralise that. Its not abiut losing sleep over the guy murdered, its about he murderer being a fucking evil murderer, because murder is bad

@Garytweets7 @NotPotBol I'm not going to lose sleep over the death of a man who assisted in the murder of thousands. Due process is irrelevant when the state's primary objective is preserving a system that profits off your deprivation and death

@kearnpat @NotPotBol I agree, but those Nazis were tried and found guilty. The part you are missing is that murdering a guy in the street with no due process is also an affront to human life and dignity, yet you won't admit that.

@Garytweets7 @NotPotBol Social murder is still murder. It's the reason we hanged Nazis who never personally ordered an execution for their participation in the Holocaust. Just because the state permits certain forms of violence doesn't make them any less an affront to human life and dignity

@kearnpat @NotPotBol You have absolutely 0 case that the man murdered is a mass murderer. We already have a way to take mass murderers off the streets, but you know that wouldnt work because the accusation is bullshit. Extra-judicial murders are more a sign of the end of society than a win.
