The President of the Law Society, Richard Atkinson, has warned that David Lammy’s jury trial reforms will put women ‘at greater risk of domestic violence’.
The head of the country’s solicitors has told The Telegraph that Lammy’s reforms will lead to longer delays in the magistrates’ courts.
Atkinson said the cases most likely to be taken over by magistrates would be more serious assaults, a large proportion of which relate to domestic violence. These cases also have high “attrition” rates, with vulnerable victims — anxious about going to court— withdrawing from prosecutions.
The Government argues that curbing our precious right to jury trials will solve the backlog of 80,000 cases in the Crown Court. It won’t. The Institute for Government’s report shows it would save only 2 per cent of time — not the 20 per cent promised by Lammy.
