@elonmusk DOGE should have addressed this instead of gutting agencies and creating more incentives for outsourcing

@DannPetty I haven’t opened figma except for some visual design (icons logos) in weeks. Good judgement, critique, and clarity of thought in writing and then working the clay directly have superceeded all these tools. The job has never been “the tasks/handoff deliverables”.

AI doesn’t replace design it simply exposes weak designers.

Over 10 years, my teams at my agency SuperFriendly delivered 125 projects. Projects ranged from free to $960k ($89K on average). We tracked, documented, and organized every single one in a giant spreadsheet. Now, I’ve turned it into something you can use. Inside the spreadsheet, you’ll find: ✅ Work spanning branding, UX, campaigns, and strategy ✅ Projects across tech, retail, media, and nonprofits ✅ A decade of lessons on what clients actually buy ✅ Patterns you can use to position your own offers ✅ A shortcut for benchmarking your own projects This isn’t theory. It’s a real-world record of agency work across 10 years. We went from $0 to $3M. In this document, you can see how we did it, project by project. I’m sharing this for a few reasons: 1️⃣ What gets measured gets managed. We can’t make more money if we can’t even talk about it on the same page. 2️⃣ To show what’s possible. I didn’t know it was possible to sell a website for $10k—or $100k—until I did. What if I had known sooner? I can’t change that for me, but I might be able to for you. 3️⃣ It makes me a better teacher. I can’t teach “real-world” lessons if I’m hiding the real numbers. Students deserve context, not just theory. I could sell this. But I’m giving it away for free instead. Want the spreadsheet? → Like this post + comment “PROJECTS” And I’ll send it your way.

@DannPetty @quantizor Think of variables like “components for values” — so, instead of “6px”, you make a variable called “outer-border radius”, and then you can map “inner-border-radius” to “3px” Now you don’t need styles that are component specific.

@quantizor Don’t you need a component to make a variable 🤔

I’ve been using auto layout and components in Figma for last 2 days. I’m trying to see if it’ll make my life easier designing all these interfaces but it’s only causing so much headache and so time consuming. How do y’all design like this! You’re all monsters.

After 5½ awesome years doing advocacy @figma, I took a hard look at what drives me. I love to build. I love making tools for designers and I LOVE building design tools. Officially, I am a product designer on Figma Draw!

if you compare apples to apples, a human employee has a larger carbon footprint than using a suite of agents. So if you use more AI and hire less people, you can actually reduce your carbon footprint. I should say this in bluesky, they will love this

It’s probably time to reveal what I’ve been working on since OpenSearch. Im thrilled to announce that I have joined @elastic to lead a new relicensing effort of Elasticsearch to APLv2.

Design jobs are in trouble. We may not see the full effect for few more years but the change is already happening. We hit a blow off top on too many jobs and unnecessary roles and in our healthy pull back stage. When jobs return, as they’re starting too slowly, they’ll be much different than when they were last decade. Speciality roles will struggle. People want to hire more doers and less thinkers. More creators and less managers. Areas that shine will web designers that build, fully skilled product designers, graphic designers that understand marketing, designers that can create content, designers that utilize AI, logo/brand designers, and of course designers that build and few others. Speciality roles will still exist but only at places that can afford nice to haves—not everyone. Start adjusting now. You may already be behind if you haven’t already. We started warning about this years ago. Always keep future proofing your career if you want to keep growing and moving up. Don’t give up. Many will. But you won’t because you want it more. You got this.
