I’m delighted to welcome Dr Jamal Ahmed @jGuudle as Director of Polio Eradication and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at @WHOEMRO. With nearly two decades of experience advancing polio eradication and strengthening disease surveillance across the Middle East and Africa, his leadership comes at a critical moment for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, as we push through the last mile to #EndPolio and accelerate efforts to protect communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. Looking forward to working closely together to protect every child from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases. @DrTedros | @GatesMiddleEast | @EndPolioNow | @UNICEF | @Rotary | @gatesfoundation | @Gavi

“Now we are in the middle of a war that we did not create.” Mogadishu’s bajaj drivers survive on the thinnest of margins. The Iran war is demolishing those margins. My latest for @thecontinent_

Grateful for the incredible support from @KSRelief and @Rotary this week in helping us push forward to #endpolio in Angola and the DRC. Every vaccination, every partnership, & every act of commitment brings us closer to a polio-free future for every child.

With rising needs & funding gaps, the appeal stresses the urgency of collective action to protect Somalia’s health gains and save lives. Continued support is vital to prevent further facility closures and reduce preventable deaths.

Encouraged by the response by Malawi after confirmation of circulating variant polio type 2 in Blantyre. A Public Health Emergency was declared in Jan & within weeks nationwide vaccinations reached 97% coverage. 1.3M+ kids vaccinated. Strong partnerships. #EndPolio

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region: 🔵About 36 000 children aged 019 years are diagnosed with cancer every year.🔵Over 70% of children with a cancer diagnosis died in 2022. With an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, childhood cancer is highly curable.
