Hunger is driving a health emergency across the Greater Horn of Africa. In #Somalia, #Sudan and #Djibouti, nearly 26 million people are facing acute food insecurity as conflict, drought and displacement continue to increase suffering. I am deeply concerned that without urgent support, millions of people will be left without the health and nutrition services they need to survive. .@WHOEMRO is urgently appealing for US$6.42 million to sustain lifesaving primary health care and nutrition services, mobile health teams, disease surveillance and essential medicines as part of @WHO’s Greater Horn of Africa response. Food insecurity and sickness go hand in hand. No one should face hunger without access to lifesaving care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean is urgently appealing for US$ 6.42 million to sustain lifesaving health and nutrition interventions across Somalia, Sudan and Djibouti. The appeal forms part of WHO’s US$ 25.4 million response to the Greater Horn of Africa (GHoA) Food Insecurity and Health Crisis, affecting 6 countries across the WHO Eastern Mediterranean and African regions. The funding will enable WHO to sustain critical primary health care and lifesaving nutrition services, strengthen surveillance and early warning, maintain outbreak detection and response capacities, expand nutrition screening, support treatment and referral pathways at stabilization centres, strengthen community engagement and pre-position essential medicines, diagnostics and therapeutic supplies. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (@Som_CAA), @WHOSom, and regional partners from EAC CASSOA, through the Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM), joined forces to strengthen preparedness for public health emergencies at points of entry through a CAPSCA capacity-building mission at Aden Adde International Airport. The mission enhanced coordination between the health and aviation sectors to improve readiness for public health threats, provided technical guidance on international standards for managing public health events in civil aviation, and supported safer and more resilient air travel.

I'm releasing $10M from UN's Emergency Fund CERF for Somalia – the window to prevent famine is short.

6M people face severe hunger. 

This funding will reach 640k people with lifesaving food, nutrition, health and water.

With support from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies & @OCHAFunds, medicines and medical commodities are en route to Somalia to respond to the food insecurity and health crisis — reaching health facilities and mobile clinics in drought-affected districts.

Last week, I visited #Somalia and was encouraged by the strong commitment of government leaders, partners and frontline health workers to reach every child with life-saving vaccines and to accelerate efforts to #EndPolio. I was honoured to meet H.E. @DrAliHajiadam Minister of Health of Somalia, @sandralattouf of @unicefsomalia, colleagues from @WHOSom, our partners, and the extraordinary health workers serving communities across the country. This week, Dr @jGuudle, @WHOEMRO Director for Polio Eradication and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, visited Somalia to strengthen partnerships and accelerate efforts to reach every child with lifesaving vaccines.

Our teams and frontline health workers in #Somalia are at the heart of our efforts to strengthen immunization services and #EndPolio. I was deeply moved to hear firsthand about their extraordinary work to reach children and communities, often in the face of recurrent drought, insecurity and multiple emergencies.
