Convened by the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, we attended a consultative virtual meeting with more than 17,000 National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), to align field operations with national priorities. The meeting emphasized the critical role of NGAOs as the face of Government at the grassroots. With the onboarding of Assistant Chiefs and integration of National Village Administration Elders, administrative reach has become more comprehensive, covering 8 regions, 47 counties, 431 sub-counties, 1,112 divisions, 4,008 locations, 9,121 sub-locations, 106,072 villages, and 59 Huduma Centres, ensuring professionalism, integrity and proactive leadership in service delivery. The session also focused on aligning field operations with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), leveraging partnerships with the Executive Office of the President, Government Delivery Unit and Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat to cascade coordination to the last mile and ensure every administrative unit drives national transformation.

The Government of Kenya is committed to transforming the waste management system of our country by promoting sustainable practices, strengthening recycling and ensuring that those who work within the sector are recognized and supported. Today I met and held discussions with waste pickers to better understand their work, challenges and the opportunities within Kenya’s waste management sector. Their voices, experiences and contributions are essential as we work to build a cleaner environment while creating sustainable livelihoods. I engaged with waste pickers in a consultative meeting aimed at strengthening Kenya’s waste management system. Waste pickers from areas such as Kamukunji, Dandora and Kayole participated in the engagement, sharing their experiences and perspectives on how the sector can be improved. During the meeting, I acknowledged the important role waste pickers have played for many years in supporting recycling and maintaining cleaner communities. Many of them have worked in the sector for a long time and therefore possess valuable knowledge and experience that must be considered when designing policies and programs. Waste management is now being given deeper consideration as the government works to build a more organized and sustainable system. During the engagement, I took time to listen carefully to the experiences, concerns and proposals from waste pickers who play a vital role in keeping our communities clean and supporting recycling efforts. The discussion provided a platform for open dialogue on how the country can improve waste collection, sorting and recycling while ensuring that those working within the sector are recognized and supported. The meeting emphasized the importance of integrating waste pickers into the formal waste management system so that their work becomes safer, more organized and economically rewarding. Participants shared their daily challenges, including unsafe working conditions, lack of protective equipment and unstable incomes. Through these discussions, the Ministry was able to gain a deeper understanding of how policies and programs can better support waste pickers and improve the overall waste management value chain. The engagement also highlighted the opportunity to transform waste management into a source of green jobs, particularly for young people and communities that depend on recycling activities for their livelihoods. By strengthening partnerships between government, counties, recycling industries and waste picker groups, the sector can contribute significantly to environmental protection and economic empowerment. I reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building an inclusive waste management system that recognizes waste pickers as key partners in environmental conservation while expanding opportunities for employment and sustainable livelihoods across the country. I was accompanied by the Chairman of the National Environment Management Authority, Emilio Mamo (Director General, @NemaKenya), Director of Enforcement Dr. Ayub Macharia and President of the Kenya Waste Pickers Association, Gesore Nyabuti. @WilliamsRuto @_KithureKindiki @MusaliaMudavadi @HonWetangula @Environment_Ke @NairobiCityGov @KNWPWA @GisoreNyabuti #SessionalPapersWaste #KenyaRecyclingRevolution #InclusiveGreenGrowth #WasteToWorthKE #PamojaNaWastePickers

Grow and Protect Trees: A National Call Ladies and gentlemen, Fellow citizens, partners in stewardship of our land, Today I rise not merely to speak, But to issue a call to conscience and to action. A call that echoes from the mountains to the sea, From the deserts to the great forests— A call to grow and protect trees. Our nation has made a solemn pledge: To nurture fifteen billion trees, Fifteen billion living sentinels Standing guard over our soil, our water, our climate, And the destiny of generations yet unborn. 🌱 We will plant where the clouds gather first— In the water towers of the Mau, Aberdares, Mount Kenya, And the proud slopes of Cherangany and Mount Elgon, Where rivers are born and the land breathes deeply. We will grow trees across our ecological zones— In the cool highlands and fertile valleys, Across the savannahs of Narok and Kajiado, Along the shores of Lake Victoria, And in the resilient drylands of Turkana, Marsabit, and Garissa. For every region of Kenya has a role In this great green restoration. We will plant along the highways, Where travelers cross the length of our republic— Green corridors rising beside the roads of progress. And we will plant along the byways, The quiet village paths and dusty rural roads, Where children walk each morning toward their dreams. Our urban green spaces must flourish again. Let the great Karura Forest continue to inspire us, Together with Ngong Road Forest, the Nairobi Arboretum, And parks in every town from Mombasa to Kisumu, From Eldoret to Kitale, from Nakuru to Nyeri. 🌳 Let every city breathe again with trees. We shall plant in schools and institutions, Where young minds learn that stewardship is a duty. Every classroom a nursery of knowledge, Every school compound a sanctuary of seedlings. We shall plant in universities, churches, mosques, markets, and farms, In public lands and private fields, On hillsides, riverbanks, and degraded lands— Until the map of our nation Becomes a tapestry of green. But let me be clear: Our mission is not only to plant trees. We must also grow and protect trees. For a seedling planted without care Is only a promise half kept. We must water them. Guard them. Allow them to rise strong against the winds of time. Communities must nurture them. Institutions must safeguard them. And every citizen must become A custodian of this living heritage. If we act together— Government and citizens, youth and elders, Farmers, teachers, rangers, and students— The vision of fifteen billion trees Will not be a distant dream. It will be a living forest Spreading across our hills, plains, and cities. Let this be our rallying call: Grow trees. Protect trees. Restore our land. Secure our future. And when history remembers this generation, Let it be said that we did not inherit the earth Only to diminish it— But that we restored it, renewed it, And made it greener than we found it. 🌍🌳 @WilliamsRuto @_KithureKindiki @MusaliaMudavadi @HonWetangula @Environment_Ke @EnviClimateC_Ke @Forestry__Kenya @KeForestService
