@CyberWarDoc @Emforeay1 @MrLeadslinger @brianeskow I’m not walking back anything. I was responding to someone saying that reps had justification and was asking if they thought it went both ways. I want gerrymandering banned, not violence. Don’t be dense.

Regarding Virginia. Can you really blame the Democrats for fighting fire with fire? Honest question.

@EWErickson If it benefits republicans more, then why are they not trying to ban it?

Democrats don't really want a national ban on gerrymandering in large part because both Democrat and Republican data experts agree it would hurt the Democrats. It's a talking point. In California, their nonpartisan gerrymandering board was packed with Democrats, some of whom just claimed to be Republicans to get on the board.

@FrankLuntz Stop being surprised that Dems don’t want to just roll over and die instead of fighting back. I want fair representation and distribution, but until then the only choice is fair representation and unfair distribution.

Red states: mixed delegations Blue states: one-party rule TX: 13 Dems FL: 8 Dems GA: 5 Dems NC: 4 Dems MI: 6 Dems MA: 0 Republicans CA: 4/52 Republicans (after redraw) CT: 0 Republicans RI: 0 Republicans HI: 0 Republicans VA: 1 Republican Not the same system.
Governor Abigail Spanberger@GovernorVA

Virginia voters have spoken, and tonight they pushed back against a President who claims he is ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats in Congress. As we watched other states go along with those demands without voter input, Virginians refused to let that stand. We responded the right way: at the ballot box.

@WhiteHelljumper @zackbeauchamp The party in control still would get the advantage. Same would got for Texas or similar states. There’s no perfect way to distribute representation, but it’d be a whole lot more fair than post prop 50, no?

It is objectively bad for democracy that both blue and red states are doing extreme gerrymanders. But the only feasible solution — a national ban on partisan gerrymandering — has only been endorsed by one party. And it's not the one complaining about Virginia right now.

@billybinion Isn't it more galling for the 'democracy is under threat' crowd to draw one of the most insanely gerrymandered maps you've ever seen and then claim it as a move of integrity and light? It's gobsmacking that the 'sensibles' are doing this.

I'm not a fan of gerrymandering. But I'm still waiting for a convincing explanation for why it’s a “threat to democracy” when Democrats do it and mysteriously fine when Republicans do. The extremely blatant double standard is a bit much.

@beachmamax2 @JoePostingg Yes, that is what a national ban would do, every state. Why don’t republicans support the same ban? Seriously, there’s a law being blocked by them now and they have a trifecta. Nothing is stopping them. Dems support it, so why are they blocking it?

@JoePostingg I’m absolutely down with a national ban. But only if every single map is redrawn in every single state. Democrats only want a ban because they’ve run out of states to gerrymander.

Gerrymandering is stupid and bad, but it's deeply unserious to be big mad about specific examples of gerrymandering without supporting a national ban.

@TheMasklessAP @RedVictoryGop @ECaliberSeven 2022 is not mid decade. Maybe a little later than most states, but almost all got the 2020 census results in 2021 and completed redistricting within a year. Do you support banning gerrymandering nationwide?

Needless to say, there’s no way Virginia’s redistricting referendum would’ve passed if Trump didn’t fire the opening salvo in Texas. In fact, Dems are now projected to HANDILY win the mid-decade redistricting fight this cycle. Play with fire, don’t cry if you get burned.

Few things more pathetic than a former Republican who lost his political career to a blue state gerrymander becoming a cheerleader for another bad blue state gerrymander because it keeps him on the lib podcast circuit.
Adam Kinzinger (Slava Ukraini) 🇺🇸🇺🇦@AdamKinzinger

If you live in Virginia, tomorrow you have a huge opportunity to make it clear to the GOP that if they want to win, it won’t be by changing the rules and redrawing maps. At least, not without a fight. Vote YES on the redistricting vote, and push back!

@alexiboaslav @WhickTv Honest answer is this. If one side does it (doesn’t matter which), the only two fair options are to ban it so no one does it or both do it. I’d prefer no one does it, but I’m not willing to get stepped on by people who have no values. We have to fight fire with fire.

@WhickTv Am I not supposed to feel disgusted about this just because “they do it too”? Trump, fundamentally is the most guilty party. But this whole arms race is a spit in the face to Democratic values. How is supporting this amendment not hypocritical of me?

Look, I hear you. I don't like gerrymandering either. Republicans control the senate, the house, have the presidency, and are 6-3 on SCOTUS. They could ban gerrymandering. They could've stopped this and all other gerrymanders If they wanted to. Ask yourself: "Why don't they?"

@Emforeay1 @MrLeadslinger @brianeskow No. No one should try. Violence for this is stupid. That’s the point. Could easily be fixed with a national ban on gerrymandering. Ask yourself why republicans won’t support it. There’s a bill they’re currently blocking in committee. Ask yourself why not?

@RedVictoryGop @ECaliberSeven Gerrymandering sucks, both parties do it. But none of this ever happened mid decade until Trump told Texas to do it. You either know that and are being dishonest or you’re a complete idiot. Not really a middle ground here.

Texas redistricts without a vote, Republicans cheer. Dems in Virginia respond by putting it UP FOR A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE, it passes, Republican cry foul. Oh well. Good job Virginia!!

A reminder while Republicans bitch about Democrats finishing the redistricting fight that they started: they’ve got full control of government— they can pass a law banning partisan gerrymandering any time they want to. They won’t. Republicans aren’t mad that gerrymandering exists; they’re mad that they’re not the only ones using it.

Virginia is a 50/50 purple state with a close 6-5 congressional split. Yet this redistricting referendum could lock in a 10-1 map. How does a competitive Commonwealth suddenly get near-total one-party representation? Make it make sense!

I hope at some point in this disgusting race to the bottom we can have a grown up conversation about gerrymandering and why we should address it at the congressional level. But just read the con replies to any Virginia stuff and you can see why that’s gonna be tough.
