I don’t understand why some people are eager to write off Pakistan’s role in mediation. Pakistan kept the diplomatic channel alive at the height of escalation. Hours before Donald Trump’s bombing deadline, Islamabad helped create a two-week window for negotiations. It is a big deal considering where things were heading. Whether Shehbaz Sharif can actually bridge the hardened positions between Iran and the United States during the Islamabad Talks is another question. But Pakistan has at least opened the door for talks. Pakistan has helped move the needle of diplomacy.
