BIG ANNOUNCEMENT 📢 @amitabhk87 will be joining opening plenary on #WorldEnvironmentDay 2025, on day 3 of #UrbanAdda, conference with themes rooted in #SDG (Specially SDG 11 - "#SustainableCities & Communities") 📍India Habitat Centre 🗓️June 5, 2025 | 10:00AM @Raahgiri_Fdn @TheICCT @GuruJalGurugram

At the #UrbanAdda 2025, Professor Dr. Geetam Tiwari from @iitdelhi’s Transportation Research and Injury Prevention (TRIP) Centre provided key insights on adopting the Vision Zero approach in India. An interesting point she mentions is that the chances of an accident increase by 85% when speed crosses 30 kmph, and the human body, especially our bones, is not designed to withstand impacts above 30 kmph.🛑 She emphasises that road and highway design must take into account human physical limitations and behaviour, which are major causes of road accidents in India. While ensuring that the law is followed is important, authorities must also recognise that not everyone will comply with speed limits. Therefore, the focus should be on designing road textures, especially at intersections🚦, that naturally compel drivers to slow down. She also introduces the concept of "Pedestrian Generator Points🚶♂️"… areas where pedestrian crossings must be intuitively designed. For example, if there is a bus stop, people are definitely going to cross the road immediately, prioritising time, convenience, and shorter walking distance over safety or risk. @Raahgiri_Fdn @TheICCT_India @GuruJalGurugram @MORTHIndia @PMOIndia #LowSpeedMatters
