I’ve made a reel on Instagram (@SabeerBhatia.official) comparing the advice given to young people in India versus elsewhere. Some argue that the extra hand-holding in India reflects strong family values. I disagree. Family values should be about raising confident, capable and independent individuals-not creating lifelong dependence. Protect your children, yes. But also teach them to think for themselves, take responsibility, make decisions, fail, learn and stand on their own feet. Teaching dependence is not family values. Teaching independence is.

Modi Regime in Panic Mode: From Absurd FIR against me to Crackdown on Cockroach Janta Party This post is especially for those friends and well-wishers who have been enquiring about my well-being and security following a malicious FIR registered against me in Chandigarh on April 19, 2026. I kept providing updates till April 24, regarding daily visits by different teams of Chandigarh Police, to issue me Notices for appearance before the Investigating Officer in Chandigarh Police Station (26). But they expressed helplessness in providing me with a copy of the FIR. My three-week-long silence is because it took me nearly a month-long legal battle, including petitions in the court of the District Sessions Judge, as well as the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandigarh, in addition to repeated appeals to the senior-most police officials, that I am entitled to a copy of the FIR. After all, without knowing the nature of the charges and the evidence the complainant has produced against me, how can I assist in the investigation and defend myself in a legally sound manner? I had to deal with this prolonged harassment, involving enormous waste of time, plus huge expenses, even though getting a copy of the FIR is the legal right of every accused. The Supreme Court of India has laid down clear guidelines that make it obligatory for the police to promptly provide the accused with a copy of the FIR and to post it on the police department’s website within 24 hours. Finally, on April 17, a copy of the FIR was sent to me via email. For the record, the Chandigarh police has, to date, not posted the said FIR on its website. When I read the absurd FIR, I did not know whether to laugh or cry. The charges are absurd, bizarre, and beyond belief. The FIR is clearly motivated by a political vendetta. To top it all, I was advised by the Investigating Officer that I should not make the FIR public or post it on any social media platform. I am sure most of you are aware that Chandigarh happens to be a Union Territory. Therefore, it is directly under the Union Home Ministry headed by Shri Amit Shah. This is an important reason why getting the police to follow due process of law became a big challenge. Most alarming of all, many of the Chandigarh lawyers we approached refused point-blank to take up my case because they feared standing up for me, even as paid professionals, would ruin their careers. One of the lawyers who initially took up the case with enthusiasm suddenly left mid-way, saying he could not risk being associated with a case involving the prime minister. After we managed to secure a copy of the FIR through a torturous process, my lawyers have filed a petition in the High Court of Chandigarh to secure my safety and liberty. I hope and pray that the high court judges deal with my case on merit. It cannot be hidden any more that the Modi govt is working overtime to silence critics through brazenly foul means. Misusing its political clout to get the police to file criminal cases against legitimate critics on patently false and fabricated charges has become a routine affair. Worse still, the govt. is using draconian provisions of law, alleging risk to national security and sedition, even while providing the most frivolous and laughable evidence. Their purpose is to send dissenters and critics to jail without trial, to terrorise them, and others witnessing the crackdown, into silence. No wonder, the World Press Freedom Index for the year 2026 puts India at 157th rank out of 180 countries. Even Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan are ranked above India. Published by Reporters Without Borders, the ranking places India in the "very serious" category, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding journalist safety, legal intimidation, and political pressures. Scores of journalists and political activists have been murdered in recent years. The V-Dem Institute's 2025 Liberal Democracy Index ranked India 100th out of 179 countries and classified it as an "electoral autocracy". Most political parties are collapsing under the weight of Modi ji’s tyrannical regime. Let’s see if I survive the legal intimidations and political terror under which I am battling for my right to dissent and the right to free speech. While I was coping with the stress and challenges of protecting my fundamental rights as a citizen, there came delightful relief with the sudden and totally unexpected launch of a new political outfit, namely, the Cockroach Janata Party, which created a massive political storm, even though it is not a real political party. It is just another satirical platform. Interestingly, the CJP founders said nothing directly against the Modi government and yet the Modi govt. got into panic mode. The clumsy and panicky manner in which the Modi govt. has responded to the emergence of the Cockroach Janta Party, is stuff for political spoofs, and therefore highly entertaining.
