@JamesAllenMaxey The Old Man and the Sea. The Spencer Tracy attempt is an embarrassment. So much of the allegorical meaning is left out. I don't think film would be able to capture it at all.

Ten unfilmable novels: (Note: There may, in fact, be films with these names, but they seldom capture the essence of the novel.) In education, "Knowledge" is far more important than "critical thinking" CT is important (eventually). But students can't think critically about ANYTHING is they don't KNOW anything Teach knowledge first & foremost. Get as much information into their heads as possible. Then CT

@cboyack Critical thinking requires prior knowledge. Embracing AI before students can read, write, or do basic math is dangerous.

AI is very disruptive to substandard "education" processes that rely on rote memorization and basic task execution. Good! That disruption should push us towards superior models that involve projects, discussions, oral examination, and real-world projects that students find far more relevant and interesting. No wonder teachers like this are struggling. AI is decimating antiquated education models that relied on information scarcity and the difficulty of developing expertise. Now that information and subject-matter expertise are abundant and accessible, how we educate kids needs to be re-architected from the ground up.

A former high school English teacher went viral with a raw farewell video after only three years in the classroom. She said many of her students can barely write a few coherent sentences, don’t know how to format a resume or cover letter, and increasingly just ask ChatGPT to do the work for them. Her blunt conclusion: technology and AI are making kids stop thinking for themselves. She even suggested we should probably keep smartphones and AI tools away from children until they reach college. It’s a sobering, unfiltered look at what’s happening inside classrooms right now — from a teacher who just walked away. What do you think — is AI quietly turning the next generation into people who can’t think or write without a machine, or is this an overreaction?

Teachers, block AI from your classrooms. Have your students read real books. Have your students use pen and paper. Have your students talk face-to-face with each other.

Sadly, too many educators are blindly embracing AI without considering the long-term ramifications for their students. And there will be serious, long-term consequences. It is like they have learned nothing from the negatives of cellphones & social media.

I need people to stop framing AI as a tool for teachers and start understanding it as a threat to students. It’s also a threat to the teaching profession, by the way. gothamist.com/news/nyc-schoo…

When did teacher’s attire take a turn? Teachers today dress like they are all teaching PE. Growing up all my teachers wore heels, dresses, slacks, dress shirts, hair was done. They looked put together. Teachers today look like they don’t care. the way you show up contributes to the environment you work in. this may be one of the factors into why kids behave the way they do. take the profession seriously so the kids can take you seriously
