I picked three things the state auditor documented that nobody in Olympia answered for. No answers should equal no more money... One: Washington paid up to $1.1 billion in fraudulent unemployment claims in 2020. The agency had already received $44 million to fix the fraud detection systems that failed. The director was later appointed to a federal position overseeing state unemployment programs nationally. Two: Eleven state agencies could not document $1.2 billion in federal spending. The auditor found one entire state program so poorly documented it could not even be audited. Several agencies told the auditor they lack the staff to fix it. Three: Washington has spent $5 billion on homelessness in a decade. There are 25% more homeless people today than in 2022. The agency created to manage regional homelessness spending in King County cannot account for $13 million, ran a $44.7 million cash deficit, and was still receiving $113 million a year from Seattle while it happened. The legislature’s response to all three: pass the next budget. Why is it that our state and local politicians invest so much time in demonstrating how desperately they need more of our money and so little time fixing the mismanagement easily identified?
