I’ll say it: Memorizing math facts should absolutely be a first priority. Don’t we started most kids with learning and memorizing their numbers 1-10?

When I was Principal my teachers got any supply they needed. We did our own school budgets and I always allotted a lot to supplies. But do you know what else I did? I went to every service club (Rotary, Junior League, etc) on my own time and asked for donations. I’d visit churches on Sundays to talk about my school and its needs. I’d ask businesses to help. It’s a hustle but Principals willing to do so can usually get help. And these were all Title One schools in struggling communities. But if you sell the value of your school, people will help out in many cases.

@GCEagle14 Lol, do you know how difficult it is to get a child an IEP? As an educator, it’s like being a lawyer and building a case that goes beyond reasonable doubt.

A lot of kids with IEPs are just assholes who don’t know consequences and the parents don’t want to try.

@WendyDFW78 @GCEagle14 Almost none of them get this if true. Also, most parents in your position say the same, but don't actually do anything. Some convince themselves they are disciplinarian while doing nothing (or worse encouraging the behavior). I hope you do well.

My son is on the spectrum. I never make excuses for his behavior if he acts up. I immediately call him out on it. I think a lot of parents feel guilty going after their kids who have special needs because they have special needs. They don’t wanna seen as mean parents towards their children.

@logicalandmath @hiAndrewQuinn My HS calc, precalc, and algebra 2 were all flipped. Had fill in the blank notes with example problems that had to be filled out for credit. Worked great.

being a mathematics high school teacher in a good school is like the holy grail of easy white collar jobs for reasonably smart but very, very lazy people, and it actually gets easier, not harder, the more honors and AP classes you teach

The idea that all kids have equal potential is wrong. When I was in 2nd Grade or so, we all took mandatory aptitude tests that were sent to Iowa for grading. When I stumbled upon my results two years ago I was stunned by how accurate it turned out to be through my entire life. It accurately captured my strengths and weaknesses. You could have accurately guessed my ultimate career just from these scores. Identifying a child’s potential is really quite simple. We’ve had that down to a science for decades. We just refuse to accept there are some who are not cut out for certain things. We insist that everyone can be whatever they put their mind to, and it simply isn’t true.

@logicalandmath @hiAndrewQuinn Math is very easy to guardrail with handwritten tests and a flipped classroom. Even in my college math classes it was the one subject where cheating was nearly impossible.

Merit pay in education would be more effective if it was applied to administration.

@logicalandmath @rebeccajkey @lmess22 We have it in California public elementary schools. Teachers get paid an hourly rate to tutor before or after school. It’s called ELO (Expanded Learning Opportunities).

Teachers involved as coaches or extracurricular leaders should move up the pay scale at a different rate than those who go home at 3:30 the entire school year.

Not in blue or red states. Not in poor schools or wealthy. Just a. Outright lie ( unless private, no experience with it)

@hiAndrewQuinn If you really think that is the case you aren't very good at your job. Easiest is PE, History, or an elective. Taught them all.

@Nerdcognito Sad part is that there are games that I have loved for years that I am now vocally wanting to fall apart. When Pathfinder became 2e and started down that path, I was waiting for Paizo to go. D&D needs the same thing. Same thing for Call of Cthulhu and World of Darkness.
