𝗜𝗖𝗬𝗠𝗜: 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗲, 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁, 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Last month on H-SPAN, we sat down with New Hampshire State Representative Brian D. Cole (@cole4nh) to discuss his run for the U.S. House (NH-1). Brian is the first candidate for federal office to make healthy aging and longevity biotechnology one of his top three priorities. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗾𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱-𝗳𝗼𝗿-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱, 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲: "𝗠𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 – I am committed to helping Americans live longer and healthier lives by addressing the root causes of disease. I will champion policies that encourage healthier lifestyle choices and invest in research, innovation, and the development of new treatments, therapies, and technologies to Make America Healthy Again. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝗜𝗛 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿, 𝗔𝗹𝘇𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿’𝘀) – Aging drives nearly 90% of the diseases affecting Americans, yet less than 1% of NIH funding goes to studying it. I’ll fight to increase funding so we can extend healthy lifespan and improve quality of life, especially for our growing senior population in New Hampshire. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 – Healthcare is the largest driver of federal spending at 1.9 trillion dollars per year, mostly on Medicare and Medicaid, with aging related diseases accounting for nearly 90 percent of these costs, so by investing in healthspan extension through prevention, rejuvenation biology and regenerative medicine, we can reduce hospitalizations, long term care and disability costs, strengthen the workforce, boost tax revenue, save hundreds of billions even trillions over time and position the United States as a global leader in healthspan research, securing a stronger economy for future generations. 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗗𝗔 – The FDA does not recognize aging as a treatable condition, so clinical trials focus on individual diseases rather than aging itself, and by requiring FDA guidance for trials targeting aging as a primary indication and creating specialized approval pathways for longevity biotechnology, we can accelerate innovation, encourage private investment, strengthen United States leadership in biotech, bring life extending therapies to patients faster, and help our country become healthier. 𝗠𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 – Our healthcare system today focuses on treating disease after it appears rather than preventing it, leaving nearly half of our lives spent managing preventable age related conditions. This approach is not only costly but unsustainable for future generations.” Wow. A4LI will endorse any candidate (within reason) who runs on a platform like Brian’s. Tackling our rapidly aging demography through advances in longevity science directly addresses many of the issues we fight over in politics today — Medicare and Social Security spending, economic productivity, military readiness, and more — and is, in our view, the most important issue facing America. However, Brian’s decision to be the first congressional candidate to publicly make longevity a core priority is a striking demonstration of his foresight and courage. This is exactly the kind of leadership — Republican or Democrat — we should all want in office. A4LI wholeheartedly agrees with Brian’s position, applauds him for his vision and courage, and endorses his run for Congress. RFK confirmed—only R detractor was McConnell. The top national priority must be keeping Americans healthy. I hope RFK supports constructive NIH reform and advocates for funding for aging research. Only time will tell, but I promise I’ll be pushing for that with all my heart.
