Make America Ageless: Trump’s Health Picks Take Longevity Movement Mainstream Scientists and entrepreneurs say they hope the new administration will make it easier to develop antiaging treatments and boost research funding. Some are hopeful more funding will go toward research on the basic biology of aging, rather than specific age-associated diseases.

Sure nuclear war would suck and it would make all other issues fringe issues. Why? Because it would kill all of us. What else will kill all of us? Aging! And it is killing all of us with 100% certainty. It is existential. How do we make people realize it and care?

The concept of healthspan lacks a clear metric unlike lifespan. Hard to progress on something that you cannot even measure properly.

Funding process in longevity is painful and broken. And there are ZERO studies on what longevity researchers care about in grants! To fix this we're doing a 7-min survey of longevity scientists priorities in grants. Fill and retweet - we aim at 1,000 respondents!

When I see this title, I see the "die" as a big problem to fix, and it's interesting how our pro death society thinks that the big problem to fix is the inheritance tax rule, not the death itself

The Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI)
The Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI) is proud to announce that our upcoming D.C. Summit Congressional Briefing will feature opening remarks by Longevity Science Caucus Co-Chairmen, Representative Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) and Representative Paul Tonko (NY-20), alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz, the 17th Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Following these opening remarks, attendees will hear from an expert panel on the critical role of political advocacy in advancing the longevity field. The panel will feature renowned leaders in the space, including Dr. Eric Verdin (CEO & President of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging), Dr. Matt Kaeberlein (Co-Founder and CEO of Optispan), and Dr. Michael Roizen (Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic / Co-Director of Lifespan Edge), with the discussion moderated by Dylan V. Livingston (Founder and CEO of A4LI). We at A4LI are honored to be joined by such distinguished voices and are excited to continue building bipartisan momentum for policies that extend healthy human lifespan and combat age-related diseases. We look forward to seeing you all on Capitol Hill this Wednesday!

Very exciting list of gaps that have to be solved - many relevant to aging biology. And some go in the direction of projects we are working on at @TTIScience
Anastasia Gamick@AGamick

We (mostly @AdamMarblestone and Mary with the help of the amazing scientists in our network) made a map of “fundamental development” gaps in science and technology. Go explore gap-map.org.

@AlexanderMWolf7 The real use case is expanding the genetic diversity of already struggling species but stuff like woolly mammoths just grabs more attention and funding. Still funny!

I brought back the extinct woolly mammoth. Using ancient hair and the latest technology, my hybrid is similar in appearance to its extinct forerunner. This massive milestone is the first of many coming examples demonstrating that my technology works.

I’ll tell you what the problem is. There are very few experts specializing in naked mole-rats. Maintaining a colony is expensive and difficult, and there are practically no grants available. Try suggesting a collaboration to Calico—they won’t even respond. When tech entrepreneurs enter the longevity field, they often think they don’t need anyone else; they’ll discover the cure for aging by themselves. One reason @calico has gone 12 years without meaningful life-extension results is their isolationist policy. Google could have provided naked mole-rats to dozens of labs, and research would be progressing a hundred times faster. Ironically, the desire to profit from extending lifespan is slowing down the actual discovery of life-extending interventions. And while we’re at it, let me point out a noteworthy fact from the article. Unlike the naked mole-rat, the Damaraland and Ansell’s mole-rats described in the paper do show signs of aging. While they differ in many aspects, the most striking difference is the extreme degree of sociality seen in naked mole-rats. Naked mole-rats typically live in larger colonies (up to 295 individuals, averaging around 60), whereas Damaraland and Ansell’s mole-rats generally form smaller colonies (around 10 to about 40–50 individuals, occasionally larger, but less commonly). Behavior within colonies also varies: for instance, naked mole-rats exhibit a very strict hierarchy and aggressive interactions among non-breeding members. What other mammal demonstrates a similar level of sociality? Homo sapiens. And humans also live significantly longer compared to closely related species. Additionally, queens of eusocial insects live extraordinarily long lives, and worker bees or ants can even acquire this longevity under certain conditions. These observations lead us into the realm of bold hypotheses, prompting us to seriously consider the impact of “collective intelligence” on lifespan.

One of the most important discoveries in biology? Barely anyone gives a f*ck. Five years after their first paper, these scientists — not just any scientists, but a team backed by Google, company led by the current Chairman of Apple and the former Genentech CEO (yeah, the $50B Roche deal) — confirmed again, almost a year ago, that aging is not a law of nature. Nine citations. That’s it. Nine. What is wrong with us? Maybe the world will finally pay attention after Gero @hacking_aging makes humans negligibly senescent. Until then, we keep building.

We at A4LI are excited to share that Montana Senate Bill No. 535 has officially passed the Montana Senate with a vote of 39-9! This bill is a critical step forward in building upon the Right to Try Act, offering clearer guidance on provider and patient access to experimental treatments. Dylan (@dullunlivin) will return to Montana to testify this Wednesday, April 9 at 3PM MT before the House Human Services Committee. We wish him the best of luck as he continues to champion this important cause.

We can add 20 years of healthy lifespan over the next 3 decades if we focus on understanding the fundamental biology of aging. That’s my conviction. However, let’s face it currently research on aging biology is a luxury only stable and rich economies can afford. Stable geopolitical structures and peace are imperative for longevity science to be funded, as is economic growth. Ä The biggest slow down for the development of healthy life extension medicines would come from 1.) a longer economic downturn, and b.) larger military conflicts. 1.) would just reduce resources for science in general, and 2.) would move priorities to manufacturing a war machinery with little importance for longevity. Any of these could delay progress in aging biology by decades. Bottom line is, that lobbying for peace, geopolitical stability, and economic growth might be more important than lobbying for funding Longevity science itself.
