There is a reason this is one of the most talked about topics in the Bible. Both Jesus and his apostles debated this idea regularly. Jesus lived the model—nomadic, unencumbered: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). He warned: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” (Mark 8:36). The rich fool parable (Luke 12:16-21) is the archetype: he builds bigger barns for more stuff, then dies that night—“You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” Core command: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-21). You cannot serve both God and money (v. 24). Paul drives it home: “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6). The love of more is a root of evil that pierces with many griefs (v. 10).

When your working life rewards you, it’s easy to ratchet up the complexity: homes, cars, travel, possessions etc. I have found that all that complexity comes at the sake of your most fleeting asset: your time. Instead of building things, all of a sudden you’re dealing with minutiae and logistics. Instead of talking mostly to engineers, you’re talking mostly to non-engineers. The building stops…the business of managing self inflicted complexity begins. It’s worth noting that the best players in the game (Buffett, Elon) have kept their life extremely basic, almost monastic/nomadic, as success ratcheted them ever higher. I think it’s the biggest secret hiding in plain sight: When the world upgrades your status, downgrade your complexity.

ALERT: The FedEx driver who admitted to murdering 7-year-old Athena Strand blames the attack on his alter ego, 'Zero.' Tanner Horner pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering Strand after dropping Barbie dolls off at her house in his FedEx truck. Horner led police on a wild goose chase while continuously lying to them about the location of Strand's body in new court footage. The jury will decide if Horner will receive the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
