Yeah it obviously feels undemocratic for an election to be voided after the fact.
But the issue that sunk this was shortcutting the step where voters are supposed to get plenty of notice when the General Assembly is considering big changes.

Took DEMs, even vulnerable ones, forever to distance themselves from Biden; it wasn't until he failed miserably at the presidential debate. A lot of the vulnerable Republicans are gonna go down with the ship this year because they are more likely to lose a primary where Trump endorses against them.
I do wonder whether DEMs, including vulnerable ones, learned their lesson from the Biden administration's failures and will be more open to distancing themselves from the next DEM president who's unpopular.
