I think it's just a byproduct of the fact that the main stories of many things just aren't that compelling, and people yearn for deeper and compelling stories than what they're getting. This is true across television and film. For television, since there is a wide market for flogging franchises for all their worth, I think a big motivation these days is because most shows have seasons which feel more like one singular episode as far as the plot is concerned. Season 1 of many shows are basically just pilots, and people want something deep and compelling and instead they get an unresolved mystery box. The yearning must be fulfilled.

Doesn’t it suck now that you can’t put a small cool piece of worldbuilding that does a lot more with less and people are so incapable of just accepting it without begging for you to make sequels and spinoffs ad nauseum

Yeah, this looks correct to me. Iraq’s PMF ‘are not’ the IRGC, they’re a mixture of patronage networks, not a highly structured bureaucracy. Bureaucracies can shrug off leadership losses pretty easily (losing major personalities can push the behavioral needle slightly, but that won’t change their overall organizational behavior without a top-down consensus-based mandate), but patronage networks ‘really’ can’t.

That's the plan?
