UDF has sent a representation to the Government of Kerala regarding risk to patient safety due to excessive and illegal long duty hours of PG medical students in various districts.
It includes Thiruvananthapura, Ernakulam and Alappuzha, apart from other districts of Kerala.
Dr. Lakshya Mittal, UDF Chairperson, has requested implementation of the 1992 duty rules, which is 12 hours at a stretch and a maximum of 48 hours per week. Non-compliance with the abovementioned rules has created problems not only for medical students but also for patient safety.
It is requested to constitute an “Enquiry team on duty hours of PG Students” to ensure whether rules are followed or not. In case of any irregularities, action may be taken under Sections 146, 337, 340, 344, etc., of BNS if applicable.

@ajeetbharti Kindly look into resident doctors working hours issue..they are working more than 120hrs per week and more than 48hrs continuously....many commited suicide within last 2 months after commencement of academic session...

राजस्थान के सरकारी अस्पतालों ने दो साल में स्वास्थ्य 15000 मरीजों को डायबिटिक बना दिया , क्योंकि सरकारी अस्पतालों में 20 करोड़ के फर्जी और बेकार ग्लूकोमीटर खरीदे गए। अभी तक कोई एक्शन नहीं लिया गया है।

Reducing the seat-leaving penalty can significantly reduce suicides among PGs. It allows an easier exit for those who want to leave, instead of pushing them toward drastic steps. If HODs want their PGs to stay, they’ll have to create a better, healthier environment.

When will we stop normalizing:
• Crushing work pressure
• Inhuman duty hours
• Zero mental health support
Every time this happens, the system hides behind “personal reasons.”

JIPMER medicine department doesn’t have the exact duty hour junior resident physically present in the OPD / ward. In absence of such a crucial record we have enough ground to suspect or believe toxic hub JIPMER has gruelling illegal duty hours that stretches from 24 hours – 36 hours and a no week off culture in the first 6 months when the PG ragging used to be at its peak.
By the way, how is my son / daughter safe in a place where no record is maintained to mark physical presence? How can I know where my child is (inside hospital or outside)? Who is responsible for our children’s safety? How reckless is the management??
Dear parents, please be cautious with these so-called reputed medical colleges. Please get to know about the actual hours your son / daughter is physically present in the ward. They won’t care at all. They are expert in squeezing our children 36 hours till suicide or quitting in the name of training. But we can’t allow it.
