La Belgique et les États-Unis ont toujours entretenu les meilleures relations, nourries par le respect mutuel. Sur le plan de la balance commerciale des biens et services entre la Belgique et les USA, celle-ci est actuellement à l’avantage de votre pays. J’ai connu nombre d’ambassadeurs américains, aux caractères différents, mais tous ont fait l’effort de respecter mon pays et les Belges. Si un ambassadeur belge aux États-Unis avait eu le même comportement que le vôtre, Donald Trump l’aurait déjà qualifié de persona non grata. Si un ambassadeur avait tenu de tels propos durant ma présidence du gouvernement belge, je vous aurais déclaré persona non grata. Si mon pays ne vous convient pas, rentrez à Mar-a-Lago. Il ne manque pas de vols entre la Belgique et la Floride. Si vous restez, je vous demande de nous respecter et de respecter les législations en vigueur chez nous.

It is inappropriate to publicly criticize a country and tarnish its image simply because you disagree with judicial proceedings. I have already told you this. In Belgium, the judiciary is independent and makes its decisions—whether one agrees with them or not—free from any political influence. I recall that the proceedings in question were initiated by representatives of the Jewish community themselves. To portray those as a country’s desire to undermine the religious freedom of Jews is defamatory. This freedom has never been called into question and never will be in our country. Spent today partnering with local sheriffs and the NFL Hall of Fame to promote the National Child ID Kit program, which helps parents get their children’s identifying information to law enforcement IMMEDIATELY. This initiative will save lives and find kids. That’s the most important thing law enforcement can do: protect the most vulnerable among us.
