Currently writing about The New Digital Divide: people left behind as tech changes. Elders, but also people out of the workforce (even temporarily); low income; low education. New tech builds on users' prior understandings and skills. But what if you don't have those?

Yesterday morning something terrible happened in Brighton. The bodies of three women were recovered from the sea. They have now been identified and their next of kin's notified of the horrific news. Sussex Police have asked people not to speculate on the cause but unfortunately high profile accounts on this site have done just that. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@marcedavis Well, he knows he can drag anything out in the courts for years. By which which time he could ask for mercy because he’s too old to go to jail. but actually, I think he doesn’t believe that anyone would ever convict him of anything.

Here is what most people don’t understand: Trump can’t let himself be removed from office. Trump can’t risk losing power, because he can’t risk going to prison. Trump will do *anything* to avoid going to prison and I do mean *anything*.

Absolute mess in SJC with @SouthwestAir. Plane change screwed up seat assignments. Can’t seem to fix this common issue. Half the plane getting hand written boarding passes it seems. 1:50 late and counting.

I always hear stories about people acting entitled on flights, like seats are just… suggestions. Today happens to be the first time I actually watched it happen in real life. I was already seated when a family came in and took the row next to me. They had booked the middle and the aisle, but somehow managed to spread across all 3 seats by putting their “lap child” in the window seat. I remember thinking, okay… this should be interesting when the actual seat owner shows up. Sure enough, a few minutes later, a woman came down the aisle, checked her ticket, and stopped right there. “That’s my seat,” she said, pointing to the window. The family looked at her and asked, “Do you specifically…

@nickimoraa Seriously, what's up with all these fake AI stories these days? There are at least 3 - 4 of these "I got asked to switch seats on the plane" stories every single day on my feed. And not even good stories either.

I was on a late evening flight, already exhausted, window seat, headphones in, mentally unavailable for any form of human interaction. A guy shows up to my row, looks at me, then at his ticket, then back at me like I’m the plot twist. “Hey… would you mind switching? My seat’s just a few rows back.” I already knew “just a few rows back” was code for worse in every possible way. I ask, “Window?” He hesitates. That hesitation told me everything. “…middle.” Oh. I smiled the kind of smile that already says no. “I think I’ll stay here.” He nods, but then hits me with, “It’s just that I don’t really like flying, and I was hoping to sit closer to the front.” Sir. None of us like flying. We tolerate it. I gesture gently, “I get that, but I specifically picked this seat.” He lingers for a second like maybe I’ll suddenly discover generosity mid-conversation. I do not. He sighs, does that little disappointed head shake, and walks back. I think it’s over. It is not.

@Shiwon_NZ_Ao @Airbnb_uk that’s not just Airbnb. I was staying in a hotel associated with a major international brand. My female roommate arrived very early the next morning and was given a key to a room that had a man in it. The desk clerk suggested maybe I had just gotten lucky.

Just another horror story from @Airbnb_uk for your records. Two weeks ago we arrived at our booked accommodation, accessed it using the security codes given, and when we entered, we found a very startled young female student, whose rented accommodation we’d just invaded. 1/2

Today was my first experience actually being scared on an airplane. On a @united hopper plane, one of the engines blew out mid-flight. I was asleep when it happened, so I missed the big "Boom" and the sinking of the aircraft that people said they felt. I woke up to the flight attendant quizzing the exit row on the specifics of the emergency procedures and assigning roles to the passengers. I thought to myself "This woman takes her job VERY seriously..." Then I looked back and saw several people repeating words over and over out loud. They were praying. I was like...something is really weird here. Then the man behind me filled me in - the engine was blown and we were making an emergency landing in Jackson. We didn't know how the landing would be, and they would have fire trucks and emergency vehicles waiting for our arrival. They asked everyone to get in brace position, head against the seat in front of us and hands down, as the plane sunk lower and lower. I was looking out the window to see if we'd make the runway...all I saw was trees and water. Several grown men around me had broken into tears. Couples were holding hands. We really didn't know if the flight was going to make it. When we got close enough to the ground for cell reception, I took out my phone and sent "I love you" to the people who I would want to have that as my last message to them, just incase. I was surprisingly calm during those moments. I didn't know if we'd be ok, but I thought to myself, if this is the way I'm going to go, there's not really much I could do, and not much I would have done differently. I felt gratitude for the incredible blessings I've had in my life, and I felt peace. In the end, we made the runway. No one was hurt, and the pilot made a great landing given the circumstances. I was the first one to start the applause and the rest of the plane immediately joined in. We watched the firemen scope out the plane (hence the photo) before they let us off. People were shouting praises of whichever higher power they subscribed to. I did tear up a bit after we landed, feeling grateful that I could continue on this journey, hopefully for another 40+ years. But it was a stark reminder that no moment is guaranteed, and it all could go away at any moment. It's really best to live with that in mind.

@juliaioffe I don’t see how they can identify who is Jewish and who is not. A lot of people of Jewish descent are not religious. A lot of other people are of mixed descent. And people whose families may have been Jewish do not identify as Jewish anymore.

@LisaDNews thank you for listening! When someone on our neighborhood email list addressed us all as families, I was the only one to object. But every woman living alone thanked me. Some had partners who lived elsewhere. some were single. Many had grown kids who didn’t live with them.

@LisaDNews you said tonight that spring travel for families is happening. Families are definitely not the only ones traveling. politicians & journalists talk this way regularly! Not everyone is part of a family. we singles feel like we don’t count when you folks do this.
