@thewreathwright @tracewoodgrains I couldn’t be made to care about anyone in the book or remember who they were. Turned me off of Dickens so badly I haven’t read another one of his books since.

Name a philosopher you consider genuinely brilliant — even a genius — but whose views you strongly disagree with. I'll go first! Thomas Aquinas.

@kitten_beloved @rob_mcrobberson IDK if it’s true, but I remember seeing a clip from an interview with a Vatican exorcist where he said 98% of times he was dispatched were not actually demonic (implying 2% were)

@rob_mcrobberson This phenomenon is why I'm really skeptical we know as much as we think we do about marginalized topics, anything approaching the paranormal has a terrible signal noise ratio but it doesn't follow that there's no signal

@lapdoteth @PunishedAG If true, I do think it shows that the right is (on average) more curious about ideas they don’t immediately agree with than the left. It’s worth noting, even if you think that’s a bad thing.

@PunishedAG the fact the right-wing ideologues all immediately thought this was great evidence of their intellect was itself pretty great evidence of how prone to dunning-krugerism they are. some thick irony

My first offering. If you’ve ever read are considering buying a self-help or leadership book, please read Ambrose first. He’s the best I’ve ever read by an order of magnitude.

On the Duties of the Clergy by St Ambrose of Milan: 5/5. This book is concise, compelling, and effective. He’s attempting to give advice on leadership to bishops in the old church, and the result is advice about life and leadership that stand up wonderfully today.

@avidseries @skorpien I had to look up that song. Thought maybe I'll recognize it when I play it, just don't know its name. Nope. Never heard it before as far as I know. And I'll be willing to bet 90% of non-Americans born after 1971 don't know it exists.

@memeticsisyphus This isn’t meant to disparage “Demons”’ it was still good. I just liked the others more.

@memeticsisyphus That’s funny, the only one I liked less was “Notes from the Underground”. In this order, I liked Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot and The Gambler more.

I will be keeping a list of books read this year, along with a short review about them, and a rating. The rating is a 1-5 scale: 5: This is one of my new favorite books 4: I would include this book on a list for anyone who asks for a book recommendation 3: I would recommend this book, but it would come with heavy caveats 2: I wouldn’t recommend reading, but I didn’t regret having spent time with it 1: I regretted reading this

@eigenrobot @TheLastNeocon I work with a lot of black people. Last week, I got a bunch of black grease on my face in the course of repairing a machine. When I walked through the break room, someone suggested I go wash up. The guy sitting next to her said “yeah, bro, you’re starting to look like my cousin”.

@memeticsisyphus @USCodysseus I have a 45 minute commute (both ways). I rely heavily on audiobooks to make it not awful. Loving the recommendations.

The Johannes Cabal series by Jonathan Howard: 4/5 If anything, the first book in the series is the weakest, but on its own would still be a 4. Great tension and humor. The characters are badly flawed but still sympathetic and interesting. Also, it’s very fun to read.

But instead I get hundreds of pages of whining and just enough world building that I didn’t cut my losses. Which I should have.

It’s hard for me to get over the missed opportunity here. “Genetically modified tapeworm used as panacea medical device goes rogue, burrows into the brain and unleashes zombie apocalypse, but some of the “zombies” are sentient” is such a compelling premise.
