We need to outlaw for-profit private immigration jails and hold all those involved in detaining children and separating families accountable. I will continue to hold hearings to expose these horrors. And when we have the gavels back, we will get justice.

“The average time in custody for unaccompanied children has skyrocketed, from around 37 days to nearly 200 days.” Neha Desai from the National Center for Youth Law has seen firsthand how the Trump admin has ripped families apart and the harm it has caused.

Today, I was notified of another death that occurred in ICE custody, bringing the total to 45 deaths under the second Trump administration. These are not just numbers, they’re people. It’s devastating and we can’t let it continue. We need accountability & we must dismantle ICE.

A 2024 review of 52 detention deaths between 2017 and 2021 found that 95% were likely preventable with adequate medical care. ICE has faced ongoing criticism for failing to address the conditions that lead to these deaths. @NIJC
