China’s open-weight models are starting to threaten the business model behind OpenAI and Anthropic. Via Wall Street Journal Kimi K3 and Qwen 3.8 Max are cheap, capable and customizable. Kimi was competitive with leading US systems on some benchmarks, while American companies are increasingly adopting Chinese models to cut AI costs. That puts pressure on the economics used to justify billions in frontier-model investment and trillions in future infrastructure spending. OpenAI and Anthropic executives are warning about cybersecurity and national-security risks. Critics point out that both companies are preparing for possible public listings and would benefit from restrictions on cheaper competitors. Probably explains why the push so hard against chinese open source.

Does anyone understand how Chinese models are created? Americans cannot legally compete. China is doing industrial scale IP theft, and then dumping weights, to hurt our most important companies and slow our lead in the intelligence race.

Elon’s original vision of an open, American AI was right. He could still flip Grok to open source which could be checkmate. Why? If you flip Grok open source, you necessarily move all margins out of the model layer and down into the infrastructure (chips + CSPs) and above to apps. He owns a massive data center build, owns next gen inference AI and owns the most used app (Cursor). So arguably he would make *more* margin by doing this. Then moving the DCs to space makes even more sense.

closed American models costing roughly $26–$56 per million tokens. and Chinese open-weight models costing around $0.50–$1. if American companies are forced to use only the expensive option, their international competitors gain an enormous cost advantage. the policy might protect OpenAI and Anthropic in the short term. but it could financially damage the American companies buying their models... while the rest of the world moves to cheaper alternatives.

Tricking the US Government to protect frontier labs’ business model by using a China boogeyman is a mistake. It is protecting the equity of 5,000 people who are investors in OAI and Ant at the sale of everyone else. This would be a terribly stupid decision. Let the market sort this out! The events of the past few weeks may simply mean that the frontier labs’ business model is not good and that their revenues aren’t sustainable. That’s ok. It’s ok to have a business model that worked for some time then all of a sudden didn’t (remember Groupon)! This still leaves a lot of value for a lot of other American companies: - CPUs - GPUs - hyperscalers - neoclouds - rack manufacturers - electricity and power - skilled trades - application layer AI None of this value goes away. In fact, if the model layers’ costs decrease by 10-100x, competition would accelerate and I would argue that the value to everyone else will go up more than what is lost. Let the free market sort this out vs allowing two companies whose stock is owned by less than 5,000 people decide this for America.

A sane way to deal with Chinese open-weight models: ✅ Punitive sanctions for Chinese labs engaged in IP theft ✅ Require U.S. apps & services to disclose when they use Chinese AI ✅ Promote American open-source alternatives ✅ Offer third-markets subsidized computing infrastructure in exchange for commitments to not use Chinese AI ✅ Tolerate or encourage other countries’ sovereign AI projects that compete with China at the low end of the value chain
