@nicolegelinas I love the efficiency of the mixed gender stalls. Essentially automatic load balancing for demand.

@itispawel @iupdate The glossy display definitely makes colors pop a bit and look more vibrant. But the lack of glare certainly outweighs that IMO.

@nick_benson I don’t understand this logic, either. So delivery cyclists don’t deserve to be safe? So much of NYC’s deliveries are made via bike. That’s objectively good geometrically, results in faster deliveries, and helps decrease traffic for folks driving.

Would those deliveries be safer and more sustainable in cars? Would they take up less space? Of course not.
poc@rmusimg

@nick_benson — every single bike in the video is app based. This is why billion dollar app corporations hired @TransAlt @openplans — to privatize public space. There is no safety here. The delivery guys literally terrorize pedestrians, and drivers daily with impunity!

@dmtrubman The whole fare free obsession is just so tiring. If you’re going to burn millions of dollars on this BS during the World Cup, why not simply use the money to run more buses more often? Ugh.

Suspending transit fares during the World Cup for five weeks in NYC would convince even more riders that they don't need to pay to ride, and permanently elevate evasion rates. I half suspect Mamani knows that, and his proposal is intended to force the MTA's hand on free transit.

@jmp_nyc @neoavatara Likely a lot of truth to this. Plus, it’s hard to separate this from the Venezuela operation which preceded it and likely made the admin overconfident at the prospect of fast regime change.

@neoavatara Over the coming years, someone will expose what the estimates really were. It would not surprise me if the Israeli prediction did not have the regime falling by now, but Trump insisted they were being conservative, and the admin worked from that.

@Colin_d_m Unpopular option: 145th street should have been closed when 148th was added. The stops are way too close, plus you lose time with conductors having to remind passengers constantly which cars they need to be in to get out.

@AFineBlogger I loved the book and enjoyed seeing it come to life, but the movie felt somehow too long but also underdeveloped at the same time. Tighter editing could have helped a lot.

@rmusimg @TransAlt I agree to some extent. DOT projects should be paired with paid parking/loading zones to create turnover. But without NYPD enforcement, it falls apart. Third Ave is full of loading zones that Amazon and others ignore, double parking anyway as @AFineBlogger often documents.

@TransAlt Removing parking should address where displaced vehicles are expected to go and how the impact on residents, commuters, local businesses will be mitigated. Without a comparable plan, these changes create new congestion, friction rather than improving street safety/functionality.

At any given point in time, nearly one fifth of Manhattan’s bus stops are obstructed by cars or trucks. Illegal parking is slowing down your bus and delaying your commute.
Patrick Cleary@PatrickDCleary

How many bus stops are blocked by parked cars and deliveries at any given moment? I looked at every bus stop in Manhattan on street view to produce an estimate. It turns out it's 19% – practically 1 in 5. open.substack.com/pub/patrickcle…

@bfurnas Wow, can’t believe this proposal was from nearly 2 years ago. So many good approved plans have just been sitting around collecting dust. Now we just need the original bus/bikeway proposal for Fifth Ave to get resurrected. 🤞

@RossBarkan I just didn’t understand the political calculus for this at the time when it was pretty obvious the budget gap numbers weren’t fully baked at all. Seemed like a lot of political downside for no obvious upside.

Floating a property tax hike - even as a last-ditch effort - was a political mistake. A lot of people got mad, and the Times reported that. The framing of the story is fine.
Anna Bahr@anna_bahr

Framing here utterly bizarre. From the jump, Mayor identified property tax not as a strategy but as the ONLY tool avail to him to balance budget if state didn’t act by: 1) taxing the rich & 2) balancing fiscal relationship w Albany He’s building support for his preferred paths

@jmp_nyc @sam_d_1995 @LinkofSunshine Yeah, you’d need to basically remove all of the lower level’s traffic lanes to do this now. The C’s bumper blocks are right up against the Trans-Manhattan Expressway. It would be a mammoth project and probably not practical at this point.

@StreetsblogNYC For what it’s worth, I’ve found cycling in SF and LA alongside autonomous cars to be way safer than alongside human driven ones. Waymos always give me the legally mandated passing distance, they don’t try to intimidate me on narrower roads, and they never run reds or stop signs.

@LinkofSunshine Something that bugs me though is the fact that the sidewalk widening is only on one side of the street. I guess it’s a cost issue? Or concern about geometry around the existing concrete islands? Feels like a missed opportunity.

I have missed many flights due to my own fault but today was not one of them. Got to JFK T5 priority line 74 minutes before 6:59am domestic flight. Probably the earliest I’ve ever got to the airport because people said “there’s a line” and I said “ok I’ll get there early.” Priority line was two hours wait. So now I am … early … for the next flight … at 10.
